The northern part of Sikkim is certainly creditable for its sublime beauty. North Sikkim is held synonymous with the Switzerland of India. Moreover, North Sikkim is the largest district in Sikkim. This district boasts some of the best attractions in Sikkim. North District has numerous places to see and explore. Mangan enjoys authority, being its headquarters. 

North District has the most mountainous terrain, & this makes it also the lowest populated district of Sikkim. Many parts of this district are inaccessible or require special permits to visit. The northern part is patrolled heavily by the Indian armed forces owing to its border sharing with the People's Republic of China. 

North Sikkim is a resplendent region with high pastures, wild orchids, frozen lakes, ancient monasteries, holy Chortens (stupas), striking animals, and high mountains like Mt Siniolchu. It also offers the best trekking region of Sikkim along with its Green Lake Trek.

1: Lachung
Lachung
The village, spread out on either side of Lachung Chu, has maintained its unique culture and tradition. The Lachung Monastery on the slope opposite the highway is a focal point of all religious functions of the local inhabitants. To get a glimpse of the religious rituals performed on auspicious occasions, a visit to Monastery must be a part of your tour itinerary. Lachung lies on the way to Yumthang Valley as we move from Gangtok. Yumthang is just 25 km away. There is also an army cantonment for border protection. If interested, you can do trout fishing.
 
2: Lachen Pass

This small town is at an altitude of 2735 meters, 123 km from the capital. The journey takes almost 6-hrs drive & it is also a base for the Green Lake trek & most of the mountaineering activities. This new destination of the millennium only opened on the 20th of December 2000 for domestic and foreign tourists. It's a nature's gifted wonderland & it is hard to explain the glory of this place, the people, culture, monasteries, valleys flowers zone. The famous Yak race in Thangu, Chopta Valley, and Domestic Tourists can also visit Gurudongmar Lake and Cholamu Lake, the source of river Teesta.

Mangan is the district headquarters of North Sikkim, a little hamlet with flower patches, and the water wheels strung with bells set in exquisite miniature gardens more than compensate for the primitiveness of the region. The Mangan Bazaar is on the North Sikkim highway with around fifty-odd shops. From the Pentok area, the picturesque view of mount Siniolchu is also visible.

The area also has a number of interesting short nature treks of 1 to 3 days along the higher ridges of the surrounding hills. Its 4 kms from Mangan, from where one can take a glorious view of Mt. Khanchenjunga, and its neighbouring peaks. Half an hour uphill walk takes you to an ancient monastery.

20 km from Gangtok is the sacred spot of Kabi, where the pact of blood brotherhood was sworn between the Lepchas and the Bhutias in the 15th century. Nine stones were erected facing Mount Khangchendzonga to witness the treaty of brotherhood between the Lepchas and the Bhutias. To this day, the stones stand as testimony to the treaty. The area is a sacred grove rich with medicinal plants and is the venue for the annual Siqueok Puja, a thanksgiving for a good harvest to the Gods and prayers for continued benevolence. 
 
7: Phodong Monastery

Phodong Monastery is one of the six most important Buddhist monasteries in Sikkim-India. Perched at an altitude of 4500 ft, Phodong Monastery belongs to the Kargyupa sect. This Monastery is found a kilometer ahead of Phodong on a hill & can be reached easily by hiring private transport like taxis and jeeps from Magan in Sikkim. Phodong Monastery is said to have been built in the early 18th century by Chogyal Gyurmed Namgyal. This beautiful Monastery makes the abode of not less than 250 monks. Adorned by the old mural paintings, Phodong Monastery is the significant Monastery of the Karmapa sub-sect of the Kagyupa sect. Phodong Monastery is a place worth visiting in Sikkim. 
 
8: Yumthang Valley

To fasten the beauty of Yumthang Valley in words would be like slighting the creator of such splendor. Yumthang Valley is just the right place, where magnificence seeks no bounds. Perched at the bewildering elevation of 11800 ft, Yumthang Valley tenders an awe-inspiring spectacle of alpine pastures, rhododendron forest, and snow-cloaked peaks of the Himalayas of India. Yumthang Valley is also known as the Valley of Flowers. This bottomless vale has a remarkable variety of flowers to boast of. Spring season is the perfect time to explore this valley when flowers blossom at their best. Yumthang is also famous for its Hot Springs. 
 
9: Gurudongmar Lake

The very appearance of the serene waters of the Gurudongmar lake brings a sense of relief to the beholder. The lake situated at 17,100 feet, Gurudogmar Lake, rests on the northern side of the Khangchengyao Range, in a high plateau area next to the Tibetan Plateau. Gurudongmar Lake is a watercourse of high reverence for the Sikkimese and Buddhists. Gurudongmar Lake is conceivably one of the highest lakes, not only in India but in the whole world. Gurudogmar Lake is near the Indo-China Border in the northern part of Sikkim. The waters of this lake are said to have curative properties. Gurudongmar Lake is a beautiful place to visit and behold the splendor of nature. 
 
10: Chungthang

Chungthang is a small hamlet in the northern part of Sikkim, India. Sited at the confluence of Lachen River and Lachung Chu, Chungthang is a place wholly immersed in natural beauty. At an altitude of 1,700 meters, Chungthang is encircled by sky-touching mountains on the way to Yumthang. Apart from the stunning beauty, Chungthang has a legendary rock, believed to have been the seat of the saint for the time being. This rock is imprinted with certain marks that are said to be the footprints of Guru Rinpoche. On the rock, there is a small cavity that remains filled with spring water. Chungthang is a place inhabited by the Lepchas. This small hamlet has a variety of flora, including rare orchids.  
 
11: Dzongu

Dzongu is a place with striking beauty in the northern part of Sikkim, India. Not far from Mangan, Dzongu is an untainted and least populated hamlet in the Himalayas of Sikkim. Cuddled in the silhouette of Mt. Kanchenjunga and Mt Siniolchu, Dzongu makes the perfect base for various high-altitude treks in the Kanchenjunga reserves. The Tolung - Green Lake trek is a significant trek that begins from Dzongu. This trek route is one of the most exhausting treks in Sikkim, traversing rocky passes like Kishongla and Kishongda, which reach an altitude of 17,000 ft. The forests in the region boast a variety of flora and fauna.

Both villages are in interior Dzongu on the mountain slope before Lingzya waterfall. Tinvong village is accesible by road. Keushong village requires an hour of trek upwards from Tinvong. On the way to Keushong, there is a monastery.
 
13: Seven Sister Waterfalls

On the road to North Sikkim, tourists can witness the pristine waterfall, namely the seven sisters waterfall. The spectacular waterfall facilitates the tourist to savor the perfect beauty. The waterfall is named so because it's said that water in the waterfall falls in seven stages. The falls come to life during the monsoon season. Cafeterias and waiting sheds have been set up nearby the waterfall for the people who might want to take a break and shoot pictures.

Tolung monastery is located in the Dzongu area of North Sikkim and is the most secluded of all the monasteries in Sikkim. It's accessible after a strenuous trek through the steep hillside and dense forests. The monastery possesses a fine collection of religious art, including some of the oldest thangkas in Sikkim. All the relics are sealed in 13 boxes and taken out every three years for public display, an occasion which sees large numbers of devotees making their way here.

If one loves angling, then try it here at Dzongu. It may not seem as easy as it does at places elsewhere that are popular for angling, but when patiently done, it indeed makes up for a beautiful experience. Mahseer and Trout are common fishes found in the rivers here.

Hee Gyathang is a village present in the Lower Dzongu area. It is a part of the Mangan subdivision in the North Sikkim district. Present here is a small lake, considered sacred and worshiped by the Lepcha community people.

Pentong is a village close to Dzongu and is present in the Mangan subdivision of North Sikkim. Travelers can visit this place to enjoy the close view of the splendid snow-clad mountains in its surroundings. This place is reachable by trekking.

While at Dzongu, tourists visit Lingthem, a place to hike from the Passingdang village. The trek is short but will be a wonderful experience. Upon reaching here, one can enjoy galvanic views of the Dzongu valley and Mount Kanchenjunga.

Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary is perhaps the best place to spot 20 different species of rhododendrons in North Sikkim. Located in the sublime Yumthang Valley, Shingba Sanctuary can be reached easily from Mangan in the northern part of Sikkim. Ranging between elevations of 3048 to 4575 meters, Singba Rhododendron Sanctuary is a place to view flora and fauna in their full glory. Apart from Rhododendrons, this Sanctuary also boasts primulas, potentillas, gentians, saxifrages, poppies, aconites larch, juniper, maple & rambling lichens. This Sanctuary has a small populace of Tigers, Civets, and Blood Pheasants.
 
21: Labrang Monastery

The Labrang Monastery means the lama's dwelling, built-in 1884 after it was commissioned in 1814 by Gyalshe Rigzing Chempa. They follow the principles of the Nyingmapa School of Tibetan Buddhism. The monastery, constructed in honor of Latsun Chembo of Kongpu in Tibet, is lovingly remembered for establishing a Buddhist School in Sikkim. The Labrang Monastery is at a distance of 2km away from the Phodong Monastery on the North Sikkim Highway.

The Rong Lungten Lee closely resembles the traditional house of the Lepcha sect at Namprikdang. It is at a distance of 8 km from the town of Mangan. Rare collections of artifacts of the Lepcha community are in this house. The ceiling is called Phodong, which means attic. This portion stores valuable and antique items displayed to visitors. 
 
23: Sirijonga Yuma Mangheem

Sirijonga Yuma Mangheem was designed with an architectural resemblance to its counterpart in Martam, West Bengal. Its establishment came to fruition in the year 1983. During January, the venue attracts a swarm of tourists and devotees as they converge to celebrate the Maghey Sankranti festival. This festivity signifies the commencement of warmer temperatures in the region & is honored by the Nepalese on the initial day of the tenth month, according to the Bikram Sambat calendar. The festival features an array of meals and activities that occur in various locations throughout Sikkim.
