Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, the city of Sonamarg lies before the Zoji La Pass. The literal meaning of the word Sonamarg is Meadow of Gold. The place received its name because, during the spring season, it's enveloped with beautiful flowers that look golden.

1: Krishnasar Pass

Krishnasar Pass rests at an elevation of 4080 meters above sea level & is situated in the vicinity of Gadasar Lake, which is famous as Botanist's Paradise. It is a beautiful spot surrounded by Gadasar Lake and valley, magnificent mountains & Vishnasar Lake. Surrounded by dense alpines, the place offers a pleasant atmosphere. The lake is famous for trout fishing & people also enjoy other water activities here.

2: Nichinai Pass

Nichinai Pass serves as a Trekking base & is at a distance of around 13 km from Sonamarg. It rests 4139 meters above sea level amidst nature. The lakes of Krishnasar and Vishansar are in proximity to the place.

3: Baltal

Baltal, situated around 15 km north of Sonamarg, serves as a camping ground for the Amarnath pilgrims. It rests at the foot of Zoji-La Pass on the banks of the river Sindh. Moreover, for the convenience of the pilgrims, base camps are set up on this ground.

4: Gadsar Lake

Gadsar lake, also known as the Valley of Flowers, is at an elevation of 5000 meters above sea level. It is 28 km from Sonamarg, set amidst the beautiful picturesque Himalayas, & is amongst the highest altitude lakes of the region. The literal meaning of Gadsar in Kashmiri is the lake of fish. The lake stretches up to 0.85 kilometers and has a width of 0.76 km. Surrounded by alpine flowers, the lake remains frozen during November and April. Tourists interested in fishing can visit here and enjoy trout fishing, one of the popular activities in this region. Vaishnosar Lake and Krishansar Lake are some of the other nearby tourist attractions.

Krishnasar Lake is one of the most beautiful lakes, situated close to Sonamarg, and rests at an altitude of 3801 meters above sea level. The lake is encircled by dense forests & tourists can enjoy water sports activities, including trout fishing. The climate of the place remains pleasant during the summer. Vishansar Lake, located at an altitude of 3710 meters above sea level, is 1 km long and 0.6 km wide. Located around 20 km from Sonamarg, this lake is one of the prominent tourist attractions in the valley of Kashmir. During summer, this lake is surrounded by lush green grasslands & freezes during winter. The Krishansar Lake and the glaciers are the sources of Vishansar Lake. This lake flows out through a small stream and further divides in two, of which one serves as a source to the Neelum River while the other becomes a tributary of the Nallah Sindh. To reach Vishansar Lake by road, tourists can take NH 1D to Shitkadi Village, & hire ponies covering another 20 km.

9: Gangabal Lake

Gangabal Lake, situated at an elevation of 3570 meters above sea level, rests at the foot of Mount Haramukh, the highest mountain peak in the valley of Kashmir. Also known as Harmuk Ganga, the lake measures 2.5 km in length and 1 km in breadth and is one of the sources of the River Jhelum. Tourists who enjoy fishing can go trout fishing in this lake. An annual fair is organized here in the third week of August, which is one of the biggest attractions of this place.

10: Nilagrad River

Nilagrad River is about 6 km from Sonamarg and is popular because of its reddish water. It's believed that the reddish water of this river bears medicinal properties. The river further merges with the Indus River at the Baltic Colony. Tourists visiting here can also see Krishnasar Lake and Vishansar Lake, located nearby.

11: Thajiwas Glacier

Sonamarg means meadow of gold and has its charm. Snow-masked Thajiwas glacier is one of the most enchanting tourist places in Jammu and Kashmir, located 3 km from the town. It's a vintage point to observe snow and the picturesque Kashmir Valley. It can be visited by foot and by hiring ponies. One can find snow even in the summer season. The way to the glacier offers many adventurous routes full of waterfalls and green water.

Satsaran Pass is located at an altitude of 3680 meters above sea level and is also known as the Satsaran Gali Pass. The place serves as a Trekking base and is accessible only between June and October. There are many attractions near this pass, such as Satsar Lake, Nichnai Pass, Vishansar Lake, Zajibal Gali, Gadsar Lake, and Krishnasar Lake.

What runs through the Kashmir valley and Ladakh bringing them and their corners closer, is a high mountain pass, Zoji-La Pass, 3528 meters above sea level. This pass is known for its beautiful views and landscapes. Certain parts of this pass can be a bit of a dangerous ride & one must travel down only with a seasoned driver, used to such steep and playful turns and roads. Also, the pass gets closed occasionally during the winter months.

How To Reach SONAMARG

By Air - Sheikh ul Alam Airport, commonly known as Srinagar Airport is the nearest airport to Sonamarg, which is located at a distance of around 70 kms from Sonamarg. The airport is well connected with important Indian destinations such as Shimla, Chandigarh, Mumbai, and Delhi.

By Rail - The nearest railhead to Sonamarg is Nowgam Railway Station, also known as Srinagar Railway Station. It located at a distance of 70 kms from Sonamarg but it is not well connected with the rest of the Indian rail network. Jammu Tawi Railway Station is the nearest major rail link to Sonamarg, which is well connected with all the important Indian cities.

By Road - Sonamarg is well connected with nearby places such as Srinagar and Jammu via buses. Tourists can avail J&K State Road Transport Corporation bus services to reach Sonamarg from Jammu and Srinagar. Special luxury buses are also available for the destination.

Local Transport - To travel around in the town, buses are the best option as they have good frequency inside the city. But if wanting to explore the city at leisure, one can opt for a tanga ride a horse carriage.
