About Ahmednagar

Ahmednagar is a city in the Ahmednagar district that comes under the state of Maharashtra. Lying on the west bank of the river Sina, the Ahmednagar district by itself is the largest district in Maharashtra. Ahmednagar is located centrally in Maharashtra and hence is equidistant from Pune and Aurangabad. Aurangabad falls to its north alongside Nashik, while Pune lies to its south along with the district of Sholapur. The east side sees the Beed and Osmanabad district while Thane lies on the west side. Ahmednagar has a track record of more than a half a millennium worth of history, starting right back in the 1490s. Ahmednagar was established as a town back in 1494 by the Ahmed Nizam Shah. The district hence derives its name from its founder. The region’s history goes right back to the time when Ahmed Nizam Shah founded the district under the Nizami Shahi dynasty right before it was taken over by the great Mughal ruler, Shah Jahan, around 150 years later in 1636. Ahmednagar later went on to the Peshwas and the Maratha, in and around 1759 post which it was handed over to Daulat Rao Sindhia the Maratha Chief. The British, under the leadership of Lord Wellesley, were the last of its conquerors, when Ahmednagar came as per the Treaty of Poona in 1817. The last of the great lineage of rulers of the Mughal Empire, Aurangzeb spent his last years in this very place. A small monument in Ahmednagar commemorates his noteworthy reign over the region. The Ahmednagar Fort is one of the major attractions in the city.

1: Siddhivinayak (siddhatek)
SIDDHIVINAYAK (SIDDHATEK)
This is the only idol with the trunk pointing to the right. The temple is North-facing and is on a small hillock. To make one round (pradakshina) around the temple one has to make the round trip of the hillock. This temple is situated off the Pune-Solapur highway about 48 Kms. from the town of Srigonda in Ahmadnagar district. The temple is situated next to Bhima river. The temple is one of the Ashtavinayaka, the eight revered shrines of Lord Ganesha. The temple is considered as a Jagrut Kshetra where the deity is said to highly powerful. The Ganpati at Siddhivinayak is said to fulfil wishes all the wishes of a true devotee. Photography is prohibited inside the sanctum so we could not get an image of this beautiful one. The place where Vishnu acquired Siddhis was thereafter known as Siddhatek. 
 
2: Kanifnath Temple

Kanifnath temple near Pune Kanifnath is one of the nine naths of Navnath Sampradaya. Saint Kanifnath had taken live Samadhi here, who is known as a Hindu saint and great Mahayogi. This temple is dedicated to him & is believed that he did austerity here. Kanifanth temple is a unique temple with a small entrance for only men to enter & they have to crawl to get in, whereas women are not allowed inside. Kanifnath temple is around 30 KM from Pune in Madhi near the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra.

The Ahmednagar Fort is a major attraction in Ahmednagar. The founder of the city of Ahmednagar, Ahmed Nizam Shah, built the Ahmednagar Fort sometime during the 15th and 16th Century. The fort has tall walls, 18 metres high which are supported by 22 bastions. It has 24 citadels, 30 metres wide. It served as a prison to accommodate captured enemy soldiers. It was also used to imprison several leaders of the Indian National Congress during the Quit India Movement. The famous book of authored by Jawaharlal Nehru the Discovery of India was written here. The Ahmednagar Fort underwent plenty renovations under the Nizami King’s reign during the period of 1559 to 1562. It is presently under the maintenance of the Military Command of India.

5: Black-buck Sanctuary

There is a sanctuary for Black-Buck at Rehkuri in the Karjat taluka of the Ahmednagar district. The total area of the sanctuary is 340 hectares, wherein exceeding 400 black bucks and 300 Chinkara antelopes can be seen. The total sanctuary is surrounded by agricultural cultivation outside. Many a times it used to happen, that the antelopes destroyed the crops. It was hence that a fence which gives a mild shock generated from solar means is raised along the sanctuary borders.  
 
6: Dwarkamai

This rligious place was used as a residence when Sai Baba came to Shirdi for the second time. It is located on the right side of the entry point of Sai Mandir. This mosque occupies an indispensable position among the sacred spots of Shirdi and those visiting the temple inevitably pay a visit to this mosque. In the mosque you will come across the shila, once used by Baba to sit. It is quite fascinating to note that the holy fire that Sai Baba used to light is still burning.  
 
7: Kedgaon

Kedgaon Town is around 3 kms from Ahmednagar Railway Station. It is also the home of famous person Akshay Khandve. The village has a famous Durga/Renuka goddess temple. People from all religions visit this temple to celebrate Navratri festival.  
 
8: Meherabad

Meherabad was originally an ashram established by Meher Baba near Arangaon Village, India in 1923 about 9 kilometres south of Ahmednagar. It is now the site of Meher Baba's samadhi as well as facilities and accommodations for pilgrims. Meher Baba, born Merwan Sheriar Irani, was an Indian mystic and spiritual master who declared publicly in 1954 that he was the Avatar of the age. A large number of buildings mostly associated with the earlier decades of Baba's work, the graves of disciples, and a range of pilgrim accommodation and charitable establishments are also there. Many Baba lovers work or live in the vicinity. Meherabad is a popular place of pilgrimage for both eastern and western followers of Meher Baba.  
 
9: Mount Kalsubai

Mount Kalsubai, at a height of 1646 meters, is regarded as the highest peak in the Sahyadri Range of Maharashtra. During the time when the Marathas were in power, the peak served as watchtower to foresee any danger. For the adventure enthusiasts, this mount is the perfect place to go on trekking. At the top of the mountain is a small temple that has an ancient well in its backyard. It is said that the water in the well never falls below 3 feet.

Pedgaon is a small village in Ahemadnagar district in Maharashtra on the bank of Bhima River. The village consists of one fort known as Fort of Pedgaon or Bahadurgad is now Dharmaveergad. Fort is in total ruins. It contains one building known as Mastani Mahal. There are five temples in the fort, two of which are known as Lakshmi Narayan temple and Baleshwar Temple.

Haregaon is a village in Shrirampur, Ahmednagar district Maharashtra. It is approximately 5kms from Shrirampur. Catholic pilgrims in the area visit the village for the Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, celebrated on the second Saturday of September. The Jesuit priest in the village started the celebration in 1949 to help local devotees who could not afford to go to the celebration in Bandra, Mumbai.

Shani Shingnapur or Shani Shingnapur or Shingnapur or Sonai is a village in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Situated in Nevasa taluka in Ahmednagar district, the village is known for its popular temple of Shani, the Hindu god of the planet Saturn. Shingnapur is 35 kms from Ahmednagar city. The shrine for Shani compromises of a five and a half feet high black rock installed on an open-air platform, which symbolizes the god Shani. A Trishula is placed along the side of the image and a Nandi image is on the south side. In front are the small images of Shiva and Hanuman.

Wilson Dam is one of the most popular attractions of the Bhandardara hill station of Maharashtra. The dam was built on the Pravara River, in the year 1910, and resulted in the creation of the Arthur Lake. Perched at an altitude of around 150 meters above sea level, the dam is one of the most popular sites in the region, for going on a picnic.

Alamgir is situated near Bhingar on Pathardi road. Aurangzeb died at the age of 91 at the very same place his body was taken to Khultabad, near Aurangabad and buried there. This historical place also houses a Masjid and Baradari where meetings used to take place. The library near the masjid has rare Qurans, dating back to the time of Emperor Aurangzeb. One of the Qurans here was written by the emperor himself.

It is 13 kms from Ahmednagar city. Situated on the top of a hill, it has a view of the city lights at night. It is visible from almost anywhere in Ahmednagar City. This tomb can be seen from any part of Ahmednagar, it is commonly known as Chandbibi Mahal. But it is a tomb of Sultan Khan II the famous minister of Murtaza nazam Shah I, the hill is about 3080 feet high from sea level. The building is plain but having eight sided platform. By the simple contrivance of a stone terrace built about twelve feet high and 100 yards broad the tomb seems to rise with considerable dignity from the centre of an octagon. The tomb has angular holes so placed that rising and setting sunlight falls on it.

20: Maldhok Bird Sanctuary

Beautiful birds called the great Indian bustard which is not seen at any other place are seen in Karjat, Shrigonde and Nevase talukas. This region has been declared a sanctuary for these birds. The sanctuary occupies space of nearly 300 hectors. September to December is the best period to visit.

Meherazad was the last residence of the Indian spiritual teacher Meher Baba and is today a place of spiritual pilgrimage outside Pimpalgaon village, approximately 14 kms north of Ahmednagar. Meher Baba, born Merwan Sheriar Irani, was an Indian mystic and spiritual master who declared publicly in 1954 that he was the Avatar of the age. The complex features buildings, gardens and vehicles pertaining mostly to Baba's later phases. Of special interest are Baba's Room, Meherazad Gardens, Mandali Hall, the Blue Bus and the New Life Caravan.

A wealthy devotee of Sai Baba, Shreemant Gopalrao Buti from Nagpur built this temple in 1917-1918. He wished to install the idol of Muralidhar here, but Sai Baba himself became the deity and after he passed away, his Samadhi was built here using white marble. This temple is also known as Sai Baba Temple and features exquisite silver pillars ornamented with elaborate designs. In front of this temple is an assembly hall that can accommodate 600 devotees and a part of the hall showcases different things used by Sai Baba during his lifetime. It is one of the prime tourist attractions in Shirdi and is frequented by numerous tourists all the year round.  
 
25: Trimbakji Dengales Wada
Trimbakji Dengales Wada
Nimgaojali, a small village in Sangamner taluka of Ahmednagar district, came into limelight in the last phase of the Maratha Empire. Trimbakji's spacious wada has now lost its former glory. Some of the portions of this two century old structure are in dilapidated condition. The seventh or the eighth generation descendants of Trimbakji are now residing in this Wada.
