Bahraich is surrounded by lots of mythologies. In the ancient time it was termed as the capital of Lord Brahma, who created the Universe. Bahraich was also known as the part of famous Gandharva Forest. Even today North east area of several hundred square kilometres of the district is covered by the forest. It is said that Brahma ji developed this forest covered area as the place of worship for Rishis & Sadhus. Therefore this place come to known as Brahmaich and later changed to Bahraich. Bahraich is a city in the state of Uttar Pradesh and is located on the Saryu River, a tributary of river Ghaghra. Bahraich got its name from the Arabic word bahr which means a large body of water. Situated on the bank of river Ghaghra, it was named Bahraich. Bahraich is a very old town of India, inhabited around the 10th century. It is believed that there was an ancient Brahma Temple here, thus giving the city the name Brahmaich, thus, Bahraich. Another belief is that Bahraich got its name from the Ashram of Mahirshi Bhar. Bahraich was the land of Rishis, Munis and Bhikhkhus. A town near Bahraich is named as Risiya Rishi Bhumi in ancient times. Bahraich is 125 kms north east of Lucknow, the state capital. The towns of Barabanki, Gonda, Balrampur, Lakheempur and Sitapur share local boundaries with Bahraich. A factor which makes this town important is the international border shared with the neighbouring country, Nepal. The climate & soil of this district is extremely suitable for sericulture. Bahraich is a much undeveloped district in terms of medium and large scale Industries. Industries based on Agricultural & Forest products exist here.
