About Boudh

The district of Boudh is situated in central part of the State. Earlier it was an integral part of Phulbani district, which was known as Boudh Kandhamal. It was raised to the status of a district headquarters of Odisha on January 02, 1994. Boudh is traversed by river Mahanadi and its tributaries, along which lie the extensive reverie fertile plains. The socio economic genesis of the people of Boudh lies in the agrarian economy which is due to large and extensive fertile plains suitable for cultivation. This district is famous for a large number of festivals, celebrated all round the year by the Hindus. They are either domestic festivals or public festivals. The domestic festivals generally cater to worshiping of family deities and observance of Ekadashis and Vrats. Public festivals on the other hand are a reason for merrymaking, melas and fun. They are religious ceremonies attended by a large number of men, women and children who come for worship as well as entertainment. Boudh is famous for its century old aesthetically built temples, ancient Buddha statues and caves. The mystic beauty of this place engulfs the visitors in its magical charm.  Jagati is situated at a distance of 16 kms from Boudh. Near the village at Gandhradi, is situated the famous twin temples of Nilamadhava and Sidheswar. These temples were constructed under the patronage of the Bhanja rulers of Khinjali mandala in 9th century A.D. These two temples were built on one platform which is exactly similar to each other. The one on the left hand is dedicated to Siva named Siddheswar and its sikhara is surmounted by a Shivalinga. The second is dedicated to Vishnu, named Nilamadhava and its sikhara is surmounted by a wheel of blue chlorite. The principle of construction of the Jagamohanas at gandharadi is slightly different than that of other temples. Their roofs are built on the cantilever principle and originally it appears to have been supported on twelve large pillars arranged as a hollow square.
