About Chamoli

Chamoli is a natures paradise and offers some of the most scenic trekking routes like the Valley of Flowers trek & Brahmtal Trek. Chamoli District is the second largest district of Uttarakhand, bounded by the Tibet region to the north, Pithoragarh and Bageshwar to the east, Almora to the south, Garhwal to the southwest, Rudraprayag to the west, and Uttarkashi to the northwest. The administrative headquarters of the district is Gopeshwar. Chamoli, the abode of Gods, reputed for its pleasant climate, shrines, and temples, is one of the hill districts of Uttarakhand. 

Chamoli proved itself the most spectacular in its natural assets be it maintaining scenery, valley aspects, waterfalls, floristic varieties, dramatic landform, or the climatic cardinalities. 1: Gopeshwar
Gopeshwar
Gopeshwar is a town in Garhwal hills and a municipal board in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand. Located 1400 meters above sea level, it is famous for its temples & pleasant weather & is quite cold in December and January. A sports stadium in the form of police ground is also situated next.
 
2: Gopinath Temple
Gopinath Temple
A very famous temple in Gopeshwar, it attracts pilgrims in large numbers. The temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, was built by Raja Saggar. As per the legend, the king saw a cow giving milk on Shiva Lingam daily & he constructed a temple there. Today, it is one of the main attractions of the place.  
 
3: Kalpavriksha
Kalpavriksha
Kalpavriksha is an ancient tree & a popular tourist spot in Joshimath & one of the oldest trees in India is almost 1200 years old. According to a legend, Adi Guru Shri Shankaracharya, a well-known Indian sage, meditated under this tree. The circumference of this mulberry tree is approximately 21.5 meters. This ancient tree now bears only flowers and not fruits. Another tourist spot worth visiting is the cave near this tree where Adi Guru Shri Shankaracharya used to live.

Nanda Devi National Park is a tourist hotspot, located at a distance of 24 km from Joshimath. It covers an area of 630 square kilometers & surrounded by the Nanda Devi Mountains. In 1988, this park was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Nanda Devi National Park offers an opportunity to observe snow leopard, Himalayan black bear, serow, brown bear, ruby throat, bharal, langur, grosbeaks, Himalayan musk deer, and Himalayan tahr. This national park is a natural habitat of around 100 species of birds.
 
5: Narsingh Temple

Narsingh Temple is devoted to Lord Narsingh, the 4th incarnation of the Hindu God Vishnu. The statue of Lord Narsingh enshrined in this temple is getting smaller gradually. This deity’s left wrist is thin & is getting thinner with every passing day & according to the beliefs, the day the wrist separates from the forearm, the road to Badrinath will be blocked permanently due to a landslide. 
 
6: Vanshinarayan Kalpeshwar

Bansi Narayan Kalpeshwar is a beautiful valley located at a distance of 12 km from Joshimath. It is famous for a beautiful cave called Kalpeshwar. Bansi Narayan temple, at a distance of 10 km from this place, is also a place worth visiting for its scenic beauty.

Valley of Flowers
The Valley of Flowers is on the way to Hemkund Sahib through Govindghat. Located at a distance of 2 km from the village of Ghangharia, this region is surrounded by hills enveloped with snow. Travelers can find more than 300 species of flowers like white & yellow anemones, dianthus, calendula, daisies, Himalayan blue poppy, and snake lily in the valley. Apart from flowers, tourists can also spot animals like black Himalayan bears, tahrs, musk deer, snow leopards, serows & rare species of some butterflies. 
 
8: Ghangharia
Ghangharia
Ghangaria is a beautiful small hamlet on the way to the Gurudwara of Hemkund Sahib. This hamlet, also known as Govinddham, is perched at an elevation of 3049 m above sea level in the Himalayan Ranges. The place serves as a base camp for trekking leading to Hemkund and the Valley of Flowers. Tourists can also reach Ghangaria by another trekking route starting from Govindghat. This route is quite hard, & hence travelers can also hire mules. There are various hotels and restaurants in Ghangaria for tourists.
 
9: Gurudwara Hemkund Sahib

Gurudwara Hemkund Sahib is the pilgrimage site of the Sikhs & and is on the banks of Hemkund Lake. This place holds religious significance as Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth guru of Sikhs, meditated here for years. The lake water is cold, and there are separate chambers for men and women where they can take a holy dip. Devotees can also buy small souvenirs from the nearby shops.

Lakshman Temple, also known as Lokpal temple & is on the banks of Lake Hemkund. According to legends, the temple is in the same place where Lakshman, brother of Lord Rama, meditated to resume his power after he killed Meghnad, the son of the demon Ravana, from the Hindu epic Ramayana.

Auli Artificial Lake is at a high elevation above sea level, developed by the government to provide artificial snow on the ski slopes during the months of scanty snowfall. In addition to providing an appropriate ski surface, lake water feeds the snow guns placed along the ski slopes.

Nandaprayag is in the Chamoli District of Uttarakhand, at the confluence of the rivers Alaknanda & Mandakini. Many devotees take a dip at the confluence to wash off their sins. According to mythology, Nandaprayag was the capital of the Yadu dynasty & is one of the five Prayags which serve as a gateway to Badrinath and Kedarnath, the famous pilgrimage sites.

Trishul Peak
Trishul Peak, situated at an elevation of 23490 ft above sea level, is a tourist attraction of Auli. This peak derived its name from the trident of Lord Shiva. This site also has Skiing slopes which serve as the training ground for the patrolling officers of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force. A mysterious water body Roopkund Lake is located on the foothills of the peak. This peak is also visible from Kausani and Bedini Bugyal.

Bhavishya Badri can be reached by foot from Tapovan & is in the center of a dense forest, at an elevation of 2744 meters above sea level & site is one of the five Badri shrines. The other shrines are Badrinath, Yog Dhyan Badri, Adi Badri, and Vridha Badri. An image of Lord Narasimha, an incarnation of the Hindu God Vishnu, is in a temple.

The Satopanth Glacier is in the Indian state of Uttarakhand & is derived from two words, Sat-O meaning truth, & ‘Panth’ meaning path or way. So its literal meaning is the path of truth. Mountaineers consider it a bit tough to scale. Scientists claim that the Satopanth Glacier is retreating, though unlike as fast as the Gangotri Glacier. The glacier lies near the Indo-Tibet Border, so photography is strictly prohibited.

Joshimath is a holy town in the Chamoli District of Uttarakhand at an elevation of 6000 ft above sea level, surrounded by snow-capped Himalayan Ranges. Joshimath is a sacred site for Hindus and is home to several temples & one of the four maths founded by Adi Guru Shri Shankaracharya during the 8th century. This math is devoted to the sacred Hindu text called the Atharva Veda. Earlier known as Kartikeyapura, Joshimath is a must-visit destination in Uttarakhand & provides an opportunity for trekking in the upper areas of Chamoli. One of the famous trekking routes starts from Joshimath and leads to the Valley of Flowers.
 
22: Kalpeshwar Temple

Kalpeshwar Temple is at an altitude of 2134 meters above sea level in the Urgam Valley. In this temple, the ‘Jata’ or matted hair of the Hindu Lord Shiva is worshipped & is the fifth in the Panch Kedar pilgrimage and can be visited year-round. A legend has it that the sage Arghya used to meditate under the Kalpavriksha tree in the temple & believed to have created a nymph called Urvashi at this spot. The priest of the temple are Namboodiri Brahmins from South India and are said to be the disciples of Adi Guru Shankaracharya.

Hemkund, located in the Chamoli District of Uttarakhand, is a pilgrimage center for Sikhs at an elevation of 15200 ft above sea level and can only be reached on foot from Gobindghat, located on the Rishikesh Badrinath Highway. The name of this place has been derived from two Sanskrit words, Hem and Kund, meaning snow and bowl, respectively. According to a legend, this is the same place where the tenth Guru of the Sikhs, Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, meditated for years. The destination is famous for its gurudwara, the Hemkund Sahib,  dedicated to Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Hemkund even finds mention in the Dasam Granth, the holy book of Sikhs, written by Guru Gobind Singh.

How To Reach Chamoli

By Air - The closest airport is located at Dehradun. The Jolly Grant Airport is situated around 227 kms from the place. The airport has frequent flight connectivity to Delhi and this is the most viable option for those who are arriving by air.

By Rail - The closest major railhead is located at the town of Haridwar and this is the most suitable choice for those travellers who are planning to arrive by rail. Haridwar has rail services from many cities and one can reach the place from Delhi, Lucknow and Dehradun easily.

By Road - The town is connected by state run buses and these are affordable and frequent. Buses ply to Chamoli Gopeshwar from places such as Haridwar Dehradun, and Rishikesh regularly. Tickets from Dehradun cost around Rs. 150/- Buses are not comfortable and are often crowded as they are used by many tourists who travel through this route.

Local Transport - The place offers many ways to commute from one spot to another. Buses run regularly connecting many cities and are a cheap mode of transport. One can also take auto-rickshaws that are reliable and easy to find. However, the more sturdy form of transportation is either a taxi or hiring a private car which is expensive but very easy for commuting.
