1: Jampore Beach
Jampore Beach
Jampore beach is located near Nani Daman and is one the few black sand beaches in India. There are small shops selling refreshments by the bay. The sunset at Jampore is exquisitely beautiful. Jampore Beach is a popular picnic spot and is situated near the Gujarat border, towards the southern part of the city of Daman. It is a secluded beach and is safe for swimming. The beach is located at a distance of 6 Kms. from Daman. The ideal time for visiting this beach is from September through May, when the weather is cool and pleasant. The beach is ideal for casual swimmers as its famous for its calm waters and during low tide one can easily go further into the sea. The environment of the beach is relatively quaint and is usually not crowded. Located in Moti Daman, Daman; the construction of the church began in 1559 AD and was completed in 1603 AD. Bom Jesus Church displays its remarkable and brilliant roman styled architecture. The ceilings are decorated with murals and the intricately carved gateways are sure to attract immediate attraction of the visitors. The Chapel of Our Lady of Rosary is an important religious location in Daman, which is situated in the old Moti Daman Fort. This church was built during the 17th century in the Gothic style of architecture by the Portuguese. The church building is constructed of wood and is decorated with beautiful motifs and illustrations done by craftsmen of the 17th century. It is famous for its rose-petal designed ceiling that is coloured in varied shades. This church is situated at the overgrown square, which also features one of the most ancient Portuguese tombstones that rests on a damp floor. There is a series of wooden panels in the building, which has paintings portraying the scenes of Jesus and his apostles. The church is known for its exquisite Portuguese carvings.

The Church of Our Lady of Remedies was built by the Portuguese Governor and Captain in 1607 AD. The main altar is carved and gilded with 17th century engravings. There is a lovely white cross outside the church. It features a plant bearing flowers with names written in Portuguese. A beautifully carved bell, suspended from a wooden stand, hangs outside near the entrance of the Church. The bell has been painted brown to match the doors and windows of the Church. A small grotto of Mother Mary stands next to the Church, adjoining one of the walls of the church. Next to it stands a beautiful cross made of flowers, live flowers growing from the cross. A cross made in the garden truly stands out.

The Church of Our Lady of Angustias built on the grave of Agostinho Xavier de Silva Vidigal is also a piece of master craft in wood built by Portuguese artists. This Church dates back from 17th century which was built by Portuguese governor. Its creative piece of art could be seen in its gold painted woods, kaleidoscopic paintings of Jesus and his apostles. This Church is the oldest one and its history dates back where Alfonso de Albuquerque had defeated the Sultan of Bijapur. 9: Fort Of St. Jerome

On the north side of the Damanganga River, this fort in Nani Daman is named after St. Jerome, one of the most eminent fathers of the Catholic Church. It got completed in the time of Dom Franciso de Gama in 1672 AD. The small fort with a giant gateway facing the river with a large statue of St. Jerome and two giant human figures, on either side of the gateway encloses an area 12250 sq.m. The fort encloses a church Our Lady of the Sea. The view of the small fishing fleet which anchors alongside from the fort is interesting. On the northern side within the confine of the fort were located the palaces, the secretariat and other official buildings. A large number of Portuguese gentry and their families resided within the fort. The recently built circular road is like a necklace round the Fort. It is now a popular promenade.

Naida Caves are a big network of tunnels with square hewn steps, which is yet to be fully explored. It is said that the Portuguese hacked building materials from these caves. Naida Caves are situated outside the city wall of the Diu Fort. Naida caves, Diu are located outside the city wall of the Diu Fort, which was constructed by the Portuguese. You can reach Naida caves in Diu through Delwada which is the nearest railway station. The place is also well connected by road. Naida caves in Diu are within a short distance from the Diu town. Diu’s greatest glory is the huge fort, a sight that justifies the long trip here. The northern side of the island, facing Gujarat, is tidal marshland and saltpans while the southern coast alternates between limestone cliffs, rocky covers and sandy beaches. Diu Naida caves have a natural opening in the ground extending beyond the zone of light. Caves are formed as a result of different geological processes. Caves vary in shapes and sizes. Speleology is the scientific study of caves. The science incorporates the study of geology, archeology and biology and thus ranks in special interest for earth scientists of the U.S Geological Survey. Naida Caves, Diu have been reckoned among the one of the magnificent natural attractions since prehistoric times. Productive evidence of early man’s interest has been discovered in caves dotted throughout the world.  
 
13: Diu Fort

The fort is surrounded by sea on three sides. It was constructed between 1535 and 1541 AD by Portuguese Governor Nuno De Cunha. On the fort, one can see a light house and canons. The main front wall of the fort has five windows with stone galleries. Among the places of tourist interest, the Fort of Diu occupies a prominent position. It is an expansive and imposing structure, situated on the coast of the island. The fort commands a magnificent view of sea. It was constructed between 1535 and 1541 AD after a defence alliance, concluded by the Bahadurshah, Sultan of Gujarat, and the Portuguese when the former was attacked by Humayun, the Mughal Emperor. The fort is skirted by the sea on the three sides. On the Fort stands a giant structure now housing a Lighthouse. A couple of mounds of iron shells can be seen even today inside the fort. Several canons still stare menacingly from top and some are peeping out of the holes on the walls of this gigantic structure. The main front wall is view from me eastern Rank of Diu Fort having five huge windows with stone galleries. A strange mist shrouds the entire fort. It is more conspicuous during winter nights when fog spreads all around, and the lighthouse gives off a misty light.

The other worth visiting place in the Diu is the Fortress of the Panikota. This fortress is the great example of the Portuguese architecture. From this fortress one can watch the glorious Diu Island and the adjacent areas which are located near to it. This fort is also known as Fortim do mar. The lush greenery around of this fort is very beautiful which attracts a lot of tourists from all over the world. This place is situated about few kilometers from Diu. The fortress offers iconic view of both the sea and Diu Island. Fortress of Panikota consist a small chapel and a lighthouse. The small chapel of the Fortress of Panikota is dedicated to Our Lady of the Sea. This fortress of Diu helps the tourists to learn more about the socio-cultural vitality of this part of the world. Located at a distance of around 3 kilometres from Diu, Gangeshwar Temple is a Hindu Shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. According to Hindu mythology, the five lingas here were established by the Pandavas during their anonymous stay of their 13th and final year of their exile. The place is a revered pilgrimage spot for the Hindus and is a must visit. The temple seems like its carved out of a cave like formation and the breeze from the sea gives an intoxicating feel when you enter the temple. The place is not only a place for worship but is an essential part of the Indian culture and is of prime mythological significance.  
 
16: St. Paul Church
St. Paul Church
St. Paul's church is dedicated to our Lady of Immaculate Conception. The construction of the church was started in 1601 and was completed in the year 1610. The main facade of the church is perhaps the most elaborate of all Portuguese churches in India. The facade has been illuminated by flood lights. The church adorned with curiously treated volutes and shell-like motifs and the magnificent wood carving is considered to be the most elaborate of all the Portugese churches in India. St. Paul Church is consecrated to our Lady of Immaculate Conception. In architectural style it resembles Bom Jesus Church at Goa. The dominant features are Gothic. The wood-panelling of the church is rated one of the best in church craftmanship.  
 
17: Jallandhar Shrine

Jallandhar Shrine is located on a hillock close to the beach. This small shrine crowned with a dome houses a stone carved face of Jallandhar a mythological demon who was killed by Lord Krishna. Nearby there is also a temple of Goddess Chandrika. The beach is at a distance of 1 km from Diu Town.

This church is one of the oldest churches in Diu is situated close to the Arabian Sea. The church, constructed in 1593 was later converted into a hospital is situated close to the Arabian Sea. This old church was constructed during 1593 and was the friary of the Franciscans. It is located at a distance of around 8 km from the Delwada Railway Station.

This church is a rare instance of the sublimit of art that really catches the attention of every art connoisseur. St. Thomas Church in Diu is an old church. However, no official documents are found till date to establish its true origin. St. Thomas Church is now transformed into a museum. It houses various items that consist of wonderful kitsch Catholic wood carving. A majority of these are generally taken from the abandoned churches, located around the island. One of the most striking of these is a life-size carving of Christ in the Sepulchre. A lot of people including the tourists come to this place and make donations also. The Shell Museum is located 6 kms. from the town on the Nagoa road, which is a labour of love. Shell Museum, one of the shell museums in the world, has a wide personal collection of Captain Fulbari. He was a sailor, who spent most of his life in the region collecting different. Visitors are provided with magnifying glasses for closely looking at the wide range of shells, like spider, scorpion, cockle and abalone. It is the first shell museum of Asia. This museum is also the first museum in the world where visitors can see sea shells of multiple sizes displayed through magnifying glass. There are about 2500 to 3000 different varieties of sea shells in this museum, which is situated towards the east of Diu Airport.

The beach is comparatively less crowded and boasts of its blue and crystal clear waters. One can enjoy the thrill of various water sports at this beach and it is perfect for swimming as well. The one of the historical monuments near the Gujarat border in Diu is the INS khukri memorial. During the India Pakistan War of 1971, the Indian Naval Ship Khukri sank as a result of three torpedoes fired at her by a Pakistani Submarine, taking down a crew of 18 Officers and 176 sailors. Captain Mahendra Nath Mulla Mahavir Chakra of the Indian Navy, the then Commanding Officer of the ship, chose to go down with the warship. This place is paying tribute to the heroes of that war. Many people come to pay a tribute to the brave soldiers of the Indian navy. There is an amphitheatre adjoining the memorial. Visitors can watch the miracles waters of the Arabian Sea from this point. Peoples also come at this place to make enjoyments of the sunset and sunrise.

A popular place of religious importance, the Somnath Mahadev Temple is located in Dabhel village, Daman. There are many legends associated with the origin of the temple. According to one of them, a Shivalinga miraculously appeared at this spot after many prayers by a monk who was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. The natives regarded this site as sacred and built a shrine of Lord Shiva in the year 1974. In the later years, renovations were done, and the temple was decorated with beautiful glasswork. A number of celebrations are organised in this temple, which attract devotees from regions near and far. Most prominent among the festivals is the 'Gangaji Fair', which is celebrated once in a year with keen interest and energy. A huge Lokmela also takes place in the temple, during Mahashivratri. The temple witnesses a huge influx of devotees on Mondays, the auspicious day to worship Lord Shiva.

Nagar Sheth Haveli is a colourful three-storey building which has porticoes, carved balconies, stone-made lions and intricate arches in European and Indian styles. It is the old merchant’s house laden with stucco scrolls and fulsome fruit. The one of the historical monuments in the vicinity of the Diu is the Nagar Seth Haveli. This beautiful structure tells the fine example of Portuguese architectures. Boasting of rich Portuguese heritage, the colourful three-story Nagar Seth Haveli speaks of Portuguese history like nothing else. The grandeur of its porticoes, carved balconies, stone-made lions and intricate arches in European and Indian styles makes it a must visit place. How To Reach Daman And Diu

By Air: - Mumbai, the nearest domestic and international airport to Daman and Diu, is located at a distance of 193 Kms. All major airlines operate regular number of flights to and from Mumbai. One can also board flights to Diu from Porbandar and Mumbai. Another way to reach Daman and Diu is to reach Bhavnagar or Porbandar by flight and then take the motorable road to your final destination. 


By Train: - Vapi railway station is the nearest located railway station to Daman is only 12 Kms. away while the Delwada railway station is closely located to Diu. Ahmedabad and Mumbai are the two railway station of the western railways which are placed very close to Daman.


By Road: - Daman and Diu are also well connected to the other parts of India by an excellent road network. The National Highway No. 8 is used to connect Daman by the motorable road with Ahmedabad , Vadodara and Mumbai etc.
