About Dhubri

Dhubri District is the gateway of western Assam happened to be in the past a meeting place of different racial groups which mingled together and formed a unique Cultural Heritage and Historical Background. The growth of blended culture in this region particularly in case of Language, Art and Religion is due to continuous process of assimilation of various races, caste and creed of local people, invaders and migrated people. Dhubri District is bounded both by interstate and international border i.e. West Bengal and Bangladesh in the west, Goalpara and Bogaigoan district of Assam and Garo Hills district of Meghalaya in the east, Kokrajhar district in the north, Bangladesh and state of Meghalaya in the south. Covering an area of 2838 sq kms including forests, reveries, hills etc the district has become the most densely populated district in India. Dhubri district is primarily dependent on agriculture and forest products. Main source of income is paddy with surplus production than its requirement Jute and mustard seed occupy the major share of cash crops. From forest mainly timber and bamboo add to the income though boulder and sand also available. Fish, milk, meat and egg have small contribution to the economy. Land revenue collection is very small in amount whereas excise duty occupies a lion's share of the Govt. exchequer. Tourism in Dhubri District is conferred with striking natural scenic beauties. Banks of Brahmaputra River with its abundant green fields, blue hills and hillock is almost like a feast to the eyes of the onlookers.

1: Mahamaya Dham
Mahamaya Dham
Mahamaya Dham or Mahamaya Temple of Bhatipetla, about 30 kms east from Dhubri town and 10 kms west from Bilasipara town, is regarded as a greatest Shakti Peethas for Hindu pilgrims in Lower Assam, India. In terms of attractions, this temple is the second to Kamakhya Temple of Guwahati to the pilgrims and tourists. It is believed that the famous goddess Mahamaya was traditionally worshipped by the local people of Parvatjowar like Kacharies, Koches and Naths. The temple is adorned with idols of different deities like the tallest idol of Goddess Kali, a tall idol of Hanuman and many other structures of the temple are built with time. Another place of worship significant to Goddess Mahamaya is the Mahamaya Snanghat temple located few kms away from the main Mahamaya temple. It is believed that in ancient times, this is the place where the Goddess Mahamaya used to take bath. From that time, this place came to be known as Mahamaya Snanghat.  
 
2: Rangamati Mosque
Rangamati Mosque
The Rangamati Mosque is located on NH 31 near Panbari and Rangamati. It is located about 25 kms east of Dhubri town and is considered as one of the oldest mosque of Assam. The architecture states that the mosque belonged to the pre Mughal period. The mosque is an excellence example of architecture finesse and achievement of the Mughal Empire during the 16th century. The mosque was built by an able administrator Hussain Shah in between 1493 and 1519 AD. Hussain Shah was the then Governor of Bengal. It is worth mentioning that Rangamati was a prosperous area once during the reign of the Koch rulers. It was also the frontier post of the Koch rulers. During Mughal regime, Rangamati was a great fort of the invading Mughal army. The mosque was earlier used as a prayer hall by the Mughal Mohammedan soldiers. There is an Idgah and a deep well which is believed to be built during that period. Of late, a township consisting of brick plinths, terracotta antiques and horde of coins were discovered near this mosque. These are believed to belong to the Mughal regime.  
 
3: Gurudwara Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Sahibji

Gurudwara Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Sahibji is a famous Gurudwara located in the heart of Dhubri town in Assam. The Gurudwara is located on the banks of the mighty river Brahmaputra and was built in the memory of the visit of Guru Nanak to the place. This proves the importance and significance of the Gurudwara. The first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev, visited this place in 1505 AD and met Srimanta Sankardeva on his way when he travelled from Dhaka to Assam. Later, the 9th Guru, Guru Teg Bahadur came to this place and established this Gurudwara during the 17th century. The Gurudwara experiences the arrival of a large number of devotees who come from different parts of the world. On December 3 every year, many devotees gather and come here to mark the martyrdom of guru Teg Bahadur. The Sikhs call this festival as Saidee Guru Parav.  
 
4: Panchpeer Dargah

It is Mazar Sharif of five Sufi Saints who accompanied Raja Ram Singh during his time of invasion to Assam. This Dargaha is the best example of religious harmony where all section of people irrespective of their religion pay visit with great respect.  
 
5: Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary
Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary
Chakrasila Wildlife Sanctuary In the year 1994, Chakrasila Hill Reserve Forest was declared as Chakrasila Hill Wildlife Sanctuary by the Govt. of India covering an area of 4558.7 hectares of land. The distribution of varieties of plant species in Chakrasila provides diverse niches for much Wildlife. The Significant Golden Langur exists in Chakrasila Wildlife Sanctuary in addition to other mammals like Leopard, Leopard cat, Porcupine, Pangoline, Flying Squirrel and Civet cat. Adjutants Stork, Indian Owl, Myna, Parrakit, Dove, Hornbil, Jungle Fowl, Kingfisher, Harren, Darter, Snipe and Teal are the birds commonly found. Python, Monitor, Crait, Cobra, Turtle, Tead and frog are some reptiles and amphibia that are also found. It is about 70 kms away from Dhubri Town. This sanctuary provides facilities such as bird watching, forest trekking, and wildlife and nature photography. Local guides are available on payment. There is a site for erecting tents and free accommodation for a group of 15 individuals with hygienic drinking water in the camp Tapoban provided by the local NGOs.

A newly setup garden cum natural park located at Bilasipara about 50 kms from Dhubri Town. It is a very attractive tourist place. Two world famous Wetlands ¬ Dheer Beel and Diplai Beel adjoins Chakrasila W.L. Sanctuary. These two Beels are home of a large number of fishes, turtles, prawn and birds both indigenous and migratory. There are many other important places in this District. There are Matiabag Palace at Gauripur, Netai Dhubuni Ghat at Dhubri Town, Chandardinga Hillock and Dudhnath Mondir at Salkocha, Ramraikuti at Satrasal, Airport of 2nd World War and Soreswar beel at Rupshi etc.

How To Reach Dhubri

By Road - By boarding the Omni Buses at Guwahati, which are plying between Guwahati and Dhubri regularly, one can reach Dhubri. Buses are available for day and night. Dhubri town is situated at 290 kms from Guwahati, the state capital. 

 

By Train - From Guwahati the construction of Railway line is in the process. There is a train running between Dhubri and Guwahati in Meter Gauge.

 

By Air - Dhubri has an airport at Rupshi which is about 15 kms away from the town. Now it is totally closed. The nearest operating airport from Dhubri is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati.
