About Iquique

The city of Iquique is in the first region of Chile, known as the Tarapaca Region. Iquique is also the capital of the Tarapaca Region in Chile. Zofran or the Zona Franca makes this city the pillar of the Chilean economy. This city is also called the Miami of Chile because of its clean, clear, and warm water beaches with beautiful palm trees along the coast. Iquique is home to many foreigners who make a living from Zofran. Iquique is also popular with Para gliders and Surfers. 


Iquique got its name from the Aymara word Iki & many say that it’s true of the feeling of tranquillity. In the 19th century, there was a mining boom in the Atacama Desert & which led to the development of & is now a trendy city with casinos, gorgeous beaches, and an array of bars and restaurants. Originally Iquique was a Peruvian town with a large Chilean population.

Museo Corbeta Esmeralda is the most important cultural historical heritage work that was built on the occasion of the celebration of the Bicentennial of Chile. The museum is a real scale representation of the glorious Emerald that was sunk in the Naval Battle of Iquique on 21st May, 1879. The replica was made by the Shipyards Marco Chilena and the museology by the company of design and architecture Amercanda. There are guided tours that depart every 15 minutes in groups of up to 10 people. The building in which the museum is housed is declared a national monument consists of a compact structure and constitutes a relic of the past that faces the lighthouse of the former White Island.

The Clock Tower built in 1878 is located in Plaza Arturo Prat in Iquique and is declared as National Historic Landmark of Chile in 1987. The tower was built with the mechanism imported from England. The clock tower is considered as one of the most representative urban expressions of the Saltpetre Period, a time which saw much foreign investment. The structure of the tower is eclectic combining Gothic elements with elements of Islamic architecture. The building also exhibits pointed, toothed and lobed arches in the same composition evoking a Mudejar style.

Transportation Facilities in Iquique

By Air - Many flights from Iquique's Diego Aracena International Airport connect daily with Santiago and other main cities in the country. International flights connect it to Peru, Bolivia and Argentina.

By Bus - Buses pull in from different locations of Chile and Argentina and the main terminal in Iquique is located in the north of the city. Few buses also operate from central Mercado.

By Road - Pan-Americana Highway connects Iquique to Santiago, Easter Island and many other cities of Chile.

Getting Around - Micros run along the major streets in the centre and take from the centre to the Zofri in no time. Walking is the most convenient mode of transport for getting to and from the beaches. One can get a shared taxi or get a private one for travelling around.
