Kolhapur is a significant city situated in the state of Maharashtra. The city has a rich history dating back to 300 years, and is located on the banks of the river Panchganga. The name Kolhapur is renowned all over India as well as abroad for its specialties like Kolhapuri Chappal, Kolhapuri food and Kolhapuri gur. As per a myth Kolhapur is named after the wish of a devil named Kolhasur, who was killed by Goddess Mahalakshmi. Kolhapur is famous as capital of Maratha film industry and has borne the glory and name as the place where the first feature film in India Raja Harischandra was conceptualized. The city is popular for the localized version of wrestling known as Kushti and also famous for art and education. Kolhapuri footwear, Kolhapuri jewels and Kolhapuri tobacco are known globally. These products are exported from Kolhapur. A modified version of necklace known as Kolhapuri Saaj is an excellent example of Kolhapur jewel products. Panhalgad hill station, Irwin Agricultural Museum, Mahalaxmi temple also called Dakshin Kashi and Bahubali Jain temple are few of the nearby Kolhapur attractions. Radhanagari Wildlife Sanctuary also known as Dajipur Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the best adventurous and wild life places. The Sanctuary is situated in the shadow of the western ghat which is home to more than 600 Bisons and various types of rich flora and fauna.
The museum depicts rural village life with the help of wax and cement statues and is housed within the Shri Kshetra Siddhagiri Math along with a Shiva Temple. The Siddhagiri Museum is located on Kolhapur-Bangalore Highway about 22 kms from the city of Kolhapur in a village of Kaneri.
Bahubali Hill Temples are located 27 kms south of Kolhapur, Maharashtra on the Bahubali Hills. Huge devotees thronged the temple to worship the 28 feet tall marble statue of Bahubali and visit the temples of the 24 Tirthankaras or saints. These hills are popularly known as Kumbhojgiri. A Celibacy Resort was established in 1935 and named after the sage Bahubali who mediated here about 300 years before. This temple looks very beautiful and splendid. The scene of the forest and the village farms looks full of delight and beauty. People visiting these temples have to climb about 400 steps. A fair is held here on the 15th day of the bright half of the month of Kartak, on the 15th day of the bright half of the month Chaitra and on the 10th of day the dark half of the month of Magasar.
Bhavani Mandap is a historical building situated in the walled city centre of Kolhapur in southern Maharashtra. It is located near the famous and mammoth Mahalaxmi Temple on the west. It is the glory of the city. Being the biggest and oldest building, it has historical importance. When Kolhapur became self governed, this place was built. It has fine and sound construction with 14 squares. Tomb to right with coloured fishes and a tiny temple of Lord Shiva, all appears to be history incarnate. Opposite to the temple is a grand hall pendal which was erected in 1918 A.D when Shreemant Akkasaheb Maharaj, daughter of Shahu Maharaj was married. Further, during 1926-30 Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj gave a new form to it. Taking away original wooden arches, the hall was made tall and splendid.
Chandrakant Mandare was a well known Marathi actor and an artist. He played different roles in Marathi films and devoted his life to art. He was a master in paintings and powder shading. He donated his art gallery to Government of Maharashtra which is now Chandrakant Mandare Museum. Most of his paintings depicted the natural scenery in and around Kolhapur. He also painted other significant spots in the country and abroad. He claimed that the natural beauty of his country has been a source of inspiration for him. He was always excited about depicting the new sights and places he experienced. This veteran was a tireless globetrotter. The world famous Niagara Falls has also been his visual pleasure and his painting of the falls is as bewitching as the actual falls.
By Air - The Kolhapur Airport has regular flights from cities like Mumbai and Pune.
By Road - Kolhapur lies on the National Highway 4 which connects Mumbai and Bangalore. There are state run buses from Pune and Mumbai which leaves for Kolhapur one every half an hour and one hour respectively. There are private buses to Kolhapur as well.
By Train - Kolhapur Railway station is named after Chatrapati Shahu Maharaj and is well connected to major cities across India. It lies on the Pune Miraj Kolhapur section of the Central Railway.
Local Tranaport - Being a bustling city, state transport buses, rickshaws and taxis are readily available.
