About Korba

Korba, the power capital of Chhattisgarh is covered with green forests and situated on the confluence of the rivers Ahiran and Hasdeo. It is located at an altitude of 252 meters. There are power plants and is an essential source of electricity in Chhattisgarh. Korba coalfields are also located in the region. The local language of the people here is Chhattisgarhi. The majority of the population comprises of tribal people or Adivasis. Gonda, Kawar, Binjwar, Satnami, Raj Gond etc. are few of the tribes residing in the region. Apart from the major festivals of India many tribal festivals are celebrated in the region namely Pola, Hareli, Karma, Dev Uthni etc. Pola festival is celebrated by the ritual of worshiping bullocks. A bull race is organized during this festival. Hareli is one of the important festivals celebrated by the farmers during the month of Shravan. The farmers worship their agriculture related equipments. The region has a rich social and cultural diversity. The region is popular for the production of the fine silk Kosa which is used in making high quality clothes and is used in dress materials and drapes. Kosa saris are famous worldwide. Kosa saris are sold in haats or local markets over there.

1: Shiva Temple
Shiva Temple
The Shiva Temple is in Pali tehsil headquarter in Korba district. This place situated around 50 kms off from the district headquarters on the Korba Bilaspur road. The temple is situated at the side of large pond. Many other remnenants can also be seen here. This temple is faced towards east and its enterance is in octagonal. Plinth of this temple is upon 5 platforms. The architecture of the sculptures carved on this temple is very much similar to the Jai temples of Abu Hills and temples of Sohagpur. And it is also very similar to the world famous temple of Khajuraho. Vikramaditya also known as 'Jayameyu', who was the son of Maha Mandaleswar Malldeo, built it nearly in 870 B.C. In 11th and 12th century the king Jajwalyadeo First of Kalchuri repaired it. His name has been carved on the temple. The pond near the entrance of this temple has nine corners. This pond has been found to be water filled throughout the year. Two statues and two coins were found here while the archaeological department excavated this place for making boundary walls.  
 
2: Lafagarh Fort

Lafagarh is one of the countries strongest natural forts. This is situated on the Korba Bilaspur road, about 19 kms from Pali village in the Chaiturgarh hills of Katghora Tehsil. The walls of the forts are not uniform as this fort is a natural one. The fort has three entrance doors which are beautifully decorated by pillars and statues. At the main entrance of the fort, there is a small temple carved out at stones. This has been decorated in wonderful style. There is a big dome which has been supported by five rows of pillars with each row having five pillars. An idol of Goddess Durga killing Mahisasur has been installed at the main altar of the temple. At the centre of the entrance door, an idol of Lord Ganesh has been carved. There is a pond near the temple.  
 
3: Chaiturgarh Fort

Chaithurgarh fort is one of the strongest natural forts in India. It is situated 19 kms away from Pali and is one of the 36 forts of Chhattisgarh. The fort has largely natural walls. Only a few walls have been built. The fort was constructed by Raja Prithvideva I. Menaka, Simhadwar and Humkara are the three main entrances of the fort. Mahisasur Mardini temple is situated inside the fort. The idol of Mahisasur Mardini, a form of Goddess Durga has twelve hands. There is a Shankar cave which is situated 3 kms away from the temple. The cave appears like a tunnel. There are five ponds and is surrounded by green trees and a variety of birds and animals can be noticed here. The scenic beauty of the place is enticing.  
 
4: Kendai Waterfall
Kendai Waterfall
Kendai village, situated on Bilaspur Ambikapur Highway is a beautiful picnic spot. The pristine Kendai Waterfalls is a major tourist attraction in Korba. This waterfall is 75 feet high. The lush greenery around the waterfalls provides a picturesque view to the visitors. The ancient caves of Bulisidh are also there in the region.  
 
5: Madawa Rani
Madawa Rani
The Madawarani Mandir, dedicated to Goddess Madwarani is situated on the Korba Champa Road. It is located on the top of a hill. Every year during the Navratri festival, a fair is held by the local people here. According to a legend, the crop jowar was growing under the Kalmi trees near the temple and hence local people have immense faith in the temple. The fair is held in between the months of September to October.

By Air - Raipur is the nearest airport.

By Rail - Korba has a railway station on the Chempa Gerva Road. Bilaspur is the nearest main railway station which connects it to the other parts of the country. Many express trains run from Korba.

By Road - Buses are available on a regular basis from cities like Raipur and Bilaspur. The National Highway 111 connects Korba to the major cities around it.

Local Transport - The Local transport here includes private buses, state run buses and taxis. Apart from this the local transportation also includes meter taxis and autos. The taxis and autos throughout the city charge a nominal rate depending on the distance covered. There are also shared taxis and autos available for local travel in which the fare in based on per seat basis.
