Malappuram is a northern district in Kerala known for its rich culture, historic significance and remarkable heritage. The region of Malappuram, speckled with small hills and mounds, justifies its name which in Malayalam means ‘Hill Top’. With a history that weaves ancient and modern times together, the region contributed extensively to the culture, religion, economy as well as tourism of Kerala. The district invited the attention of economists from all over the country in recent times due to its Gulf migrant population which gave rise to an unprecedented economic boom. Three rivers, namely Chaliyar, Bharathapuzha and Kadalundi, flow through the land of Malappuram enriching both its soil and its culture. The powerful army of the Zamorins kings of Calicut was headquartered here in olden days. The name of the district is marked in the history of Indian nationalism for being the venue for Khilafat Movement and Mopila Revolt. Malappuram is the birth place of the Muslim dance form, Oppana. The small towns of Malappuram contributed to the cultural, political, literary traditions of Kerala in matchless manners. Thirunavaya was a hub for Vedic education during medieval times and from Kottakkal originated traditional medical system of Ayurveda. Ponnani and Nilambur have given global acclamation to Malappuram.

1: Padinjarekara Beach

The best beach among all the beaches in Malappuram, the northern shore of the Padinjarekara beach will take the tourists to other small beaches along the coast which are popular among the locales. The Padinjarekara beach is located at the vicinity of the Tipu Sultan Road at Chamaravattom, about 5 kms from Ponnani from Malappuram. The Padinjarekara beach stands witness to the convergence of two rivers, River Bharathapuzha and river Tirur puzha, with the Arabian Sea. With its clear white sands encircled by the palm trees, the Padinjarekara beach is ornamented by lagoons, rocks, natural harbours, and other gifts from the nature. Appropriately named as the “virgin territory”, the Padinjarekara beach is sheathed by the natural beauty, without any interference from the outside world. The Padinjarekara beach is notable for the bird watching as it is regularly visited by the migratory birds. Tourists can also enjoy riding the water scooters or speed boats while munching on the delicacies served at the beach, having a conventional Kerala taste. Also known as Padinjarekara beach, tourists can freshen up and revitalize themselves through ayurvedic massages and spa baths, facilities for which are available on the beach side.

Kadampuzha meaning “the forest river”, but no river is present now is a small town in Kerala and is known for the famous temple of Goddess Durga by the name Kadampuzha Devi Bhagvati Temple. Kadampuzha Devi Temple is a Hindu temple, situated in the Thiroor Taluka of Malapuram district in Kerala. The temple is believed to come into existence approximately 1900 years ago. The temple belongs to the Malabar Devaswom Board, a Government of Kerala undertaking; the administrative activities are carried out by a trust made up of the Variar family and other trustees, which is not hereditary. The temple at Kadampuzha for Sreeparvathi is devoted to Goddess Vana Durga. The Goddess is also known as “Kirati”. Since, the idol is “Swayambhoo” or natural manifestation, it is abstract in shape. The architecture of the temple is very simple without any imposing edifices or gold plated flag mast. The first of its kind, the temple has no idol inside; the offerings are made at the hole where the Goddess is believed to have disappeared.   
 
3: Tirumanthamkunnu Temple

Angadipuram an important pilgrim centre is a small town in the Malappuram district. The town is located on the Palakkad Kozhikode NH 213. Once the capital of the kingdom of Valluvanad during the medieval period it is well known for the Thirumanthamkunnu Temple which is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavati and Lord Siva. The temple is situated at Chennai Calicut road. The Tirumanthamkunnu Temple stands atop a hill in Angadipuram, which lies around 2 kilometres towards the west of Perinthalamanna, another town in the Malappuram District. Sree Thirumandhamkunnu Bhagavathy Devaswam looks after the activities of this Hindu temple.  
 
4: Thirunavaya Temple

Situated just about eight kilometres from the ancient pilgrimage centre at village Thirunavaya located in southern parts of Tirur. This temple is the traditional seat for holding the Mamankam festival, which is held to commemorate the ancient ‘Suicide squads’ of the traditional martial arts. The first attack on the temple had taken place during the 18th century during the reign of Tipu Sultan.  
 
5: Trikandiyur Temple

Trikandiyur Temple, one of the pilgrimage spots of the destination, is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Considered to be one of the eight viraattanams or avadharams of Lord Shiva, the ancient shrine belongs to Dharmapuram Aadinam Mutt. The temple houses an idol of Lord Shiva, which was believed to be installed by Parasurama. Apart from this, idols of three Tamil trinities namely, Appar, Sundar and Thirugna are also enshrined in the sanctum of the temple. The premises of the temple have holy trees like Pinchilam, which is believed to be 2000 years old and bael tree, also known as vilvam tree.  
 
6: Mumburam

Mumburam is a famous Muslim shrine and is renowned for housing dead bodies of the Thangals, the religious leaders of the Malabar Muslims. The shrine is situated in A.R. Nagar village and is considered to be one of the major pilgrimage centres of Muslims.  
 
7: Valiya Juma Masjid
Valiya Juma Masjid
One of the oldest mosques in Kerala, the Juma Masjid is an important pilgrimage site. It is situated on the Kozikhod Nilmbur Gudallur road and there are some mausoleums of the Malappuram martyrs located in the vicinity of the Mosque. This place is prominently visited during the four day annual festival, which is held every year in the month of April.  
 
8: Kottakunnu

Kottakunnu is famous for the ruins of an old fort, which is situated at the base of the cantonment hill. It is believed that the fort was constructed by the Zamorins of Kozhikode and houses Vettakkorumakan Temple and the Shiva Temple. Renowned for its architecture, these temples are famous for housing murals of Malabar. Possessing rich historical significance, the site is renowned as the death place of Variyan kunnath Kunjahammed Haji, a revolutionary. In 1921, he was shot dead by British savagery in the premises of this site. Kottakunnu is planned to be transformed into an attractive park by District Tourism Promotion Councils and plans are driven to establish a stadium in its vicinity. Tourists can reach the destination by helicopters as the site also possesses a helipad. It also has an art gallery, which exhibits various artistic works of tribal as well as trained artisans.  
 
9: Biyyam Kayal

Biyyam Kayal, one of the backwater lakes of the district, is located close to Ponnani in the Malappuram district of Kerala. The District Tourism Promotion Councils have recently set up many water sports facilities here. Speedboats and water scooter rides being the activities here. The lake have many rest houses situated on its banks and is frequently visited by travellers during the celebrations of Onam, as the region organises boat races in its extensive stretch of water.  
 
10: Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary

Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary, a scenic stretch spread over a huddle of small islands, is a must-see attraction in Malappuram district. It is located at the strategic location where River Kadalundi meets Arabian Sea before merging into the sea. Kadalundi, the beautiful hamlet where the sanctuary is situated, is easily accessible by road. The sanctuary serves as the seasonal home to a wide variety of migratory birds. Placed at an altitude of 200 meters and surrounded by undulating hills, Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary offers an unforgettable experience to bird lovers. An exciting variety of bird species including Malabar Hornbills, Woodpeckers, Whimbrels, Darters, Gulls, Herons, Sandpipers, Plovers, Kingfishers and Brahminy Kites can be spotted in the area. The best time to visit the sanctuary is between October and March and boating facilities are available to explore the region. Apart from birds, the sanctuary houses a variety of marine species including fishes, turtles, crabs and mussels.  
 
11: Adyanpara Waterfall

A scenic waterfall, 10 kms from Nilambur, is one of the interesting attractions of Malappuram. The location is photographic, the air is pure and the cascade itself is perennial. At Adyanpara, the speeding stream finds way through the ups, downs and contours of a black rocky terrain forcing multiple cascades that plummet around 300 feet. It is located in the outskirts of Nilambur town. The name of the waterfall village Kurumbalangode may not sound pleasing. The place is nevertheless very pleasing.

Kodikuthimala also known as the Ooty of Malappuram is a hill station in the Malappuram district of Kerala in India. Located in Vettathur and Thazhekode villages, at a height of 522 mts above sea level, this is the highest geographic peak in Amminikkadan hills .The idyllic setting of this hilly area is truly fascinating. Ever flowing springs, waterfalls, a watchtower and the Suicide Point are the main attractions here.
