About Raigad

Raigad is on the southwestern side of Maharashtra State. Situated on the western coast of India and the shore of the Arabian Sea, Raigad is on a west-facing spur of the Western Ghats of the Sahyadri range. It’s believed that Raigad, named after the Rairi hill, on which the Raigad fort was constructed and fortified by Shivaji and his engineers, notably Abaji Sondev, the then governor of Kalyan. 

Situated in the western coastal stretch of the Maharashtra Konkan region is the mountainous terrain of Raigad, famed for its breathtaking natural beauty evident from its canyons, deep gorges, and lush vegetation. Alibaug is a coastal town and a municipal council in the Raigad district of Maharashtra. Its surrounding villages are the historic hinterlands of Bene Israeli Jews. It is famous for various beaches like Alibag beach, Varsoli beach, & Akshi beach.

Kondana Caves are rock-cut ancient Buddhist caves located an hour’s trek away from the Kondana village. According to archaeologists, these caves date back to the 2nd century BC. The cave has several stupas, chaityas, sculptures, and viharas. The stone carvings on the octagonal pillars of the caves depict men and women in dancing poses.

Peth Fort, also called Kotligad, is one of the major tourist attractions near Karjat. The fort is on a cone-shaped hill from where the Western Ghats, Wandre Khind Pass, and Bhimashankar are visible. It is possible to view the Sahyadri range and the Konkan plains from the top of the fort, which is accessed by a vertical tunnel within it. The Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary and the Nethersole Dam are close to the Peth Fort. It is famous in Karjat for treks because it's small in height and easy to climb. There is also a cave and a small temple at the base of the fort.

Ashtavinayaka Temple in Durshet is located between River Amba and the Sarasgad Fort. The main deity is wearing clothes like a Brahmin. The temple has two main sanctums, with the idol of Lord Vinayaka installed inside the inner and bigger sanctum. The outer sanctum of the temple measures 12 ft in height and has a rat idol with Modak in Lord Vinayaka's hands. The temple also has a 40 ft long and 20 ft broad hall ornamented with a European-style bell.

Revdanda is 17 km south of Alibag, where remnants of the outer walls of this fort, built by the Portuguese in 1558, can be seen. A structure in a dilapidated state today known as Saat Khani Buruj was constructed in 1534. The historic Port in Revdanda is the last destination in Alibag.

Korlai Fort, also called Morro or Castle Curlew, is a Portuguese fortification in the town of Korlai, Alibag, built on an island Morro de Chaul which guards the way to the Revdanda Creek. The main gate has an inscription that means no entry without a fight. The fort is 2828 feet long, and its average breadth is eighty-nine feet.

Ganesh Gully is a narrow channel which is between two mountains. At the end of this 3 feet wide Gully, there is a statue of Lord Ganesh. The idol is at the revered niche submerged 30 feet under the water.

The Kalbhairav Temple, popularly known as the Shiva temple, is a well-known ancient pilgrimage in Harihareshwar. The temple contains idols of Shiva and Kalbhairav. According to mythology, Lord Shiva made Kalbhairav and bestowed him with all his Manthrasastras. Moreover, it's believed that Bheema, one of the Pandava brothers, broke the boulder into two separate pieces since it stood in the way of the temple.

The Chaul Kadu Lighthouse is close to the Korlai Port, accessible by machine boat. The journey takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. The lighthouse served as a landmark for entering the Revdanda fort in the 17th century. It is about 6 km away. The Chaul Kadu reefs surrounding the lighthouse are beautiful to watch.

This temple is between the Vikram Ispat Company and its beautifully located residential colony. It is a temple built in pure milk white marble & its dome can be seen from a long distance. It can be reached by road or by climbing the steps.

Karnala Bird Sanctuary is a two-hour drive from Thane creek and Panvel. The sanctuary is open throughout the year but the best time to visit the place is from October to April. MTDC offers tents & Forest Department has a rest house and cottages on the highway. In monsoon, the still forest gets ruffled by the melodies of songbirds.

Placed at an altitude of 2700 feet on an irregular wedge-shaped mass of rock, Raigad fort is inaccessible from three sides. A massive fort, nested on a steep vertical rock face, appears defiant and insurmountable.

A tour of Raigad will not be complete without a visit to the Raigad museum, located at the Lower Station of Raigad Fort. The museum was created with the help of stalwarts of Maratha history like Shri Ninadji Bedekar and Shri Babasaheb Purandare. The museum exhibits photographs of various forts in Shivaji's empire, artifacts, Farmans, and weapons used in those historic times. A film show on the Raigad fort created by a panel of historians offers a preview of various facets of this illustrious monument.

Takmak Tok
Takmak Tok, or the punishment point, is the place from where Shivaji's enemies were brusquely chucked down into the valley. The rock face inclines over 1200 feet and presents a tremendous vision of the Sahyadri hills & their dropping crevasses and over-folding edges. Takmak Tok is a mesmerizing viewpoint for the visitor. The feeble at heart should abstain from tweeting into the valley from Takmok Tok because it presents a frightening slope of the valley.
