About Umaria

Umaria is a town in Umaria district of the Shahdol division of Madhya Pradesh state of central India. There are so many places to visit in the Umaria city, which attracts a lot of tourists from different parts of the country. It is situated at a distance of about 69 kms from Shahdol. Near the railway station stands a Siva temple, known as the Sagara temple. It was an old shrine, recently remodelled. Its main gates are still intact with beautiful stone statues, carved in Khajuraho models. Near about is Jwalamukhi temple. About 6.5 kms away from the town, there is another temple, with similar carvings of the Khajuraho pattern. It is known as the Mariwal temple. These all have a unique charm to gather the peoples of all the religion in the one place. Umaria is an important north eastern district of Madhya Pradesh. The town of Umaria is the district headquarters. The district is part of Shahdol Division. Umaria is enriched with its vast resources of forests and minerals. The coal mines are a steady source of revenue for the district. The most important mineral found in the district is coal and as a result 8 mines are being operated by South Eastern Coalfields Limited in the district. The famous Bandhavgarh National Park and Sanjay Gandhi Thermal Power Station at Mangthar are located in the district. The most beautiful climatic sites presents in the Umariya district is the Bandhavgarh national park the jungle though had a price to pay for the considerable protection afforded by the Maharajas, Bandhavgarh was a declared game reserve and the Royal family exclusive hunting privileges. The major predators like tiger, leopard, wild dog, wolf and jackal. The lesser predators are fox, jungle cat, rate, palm civet, and mongoose. Besides them, other mammalians present are sloth bear, porcupine, Indian Pangolin, variety of bats including the giant fruit bat, Indian tree shrew, and many other species of rodents. The avifauna is also well represented. More than 250 species of birds have been recorded with the park. Bandhavgarh, with its abundance of streams, marshes, woodland edges and wild flowers, is a paradise for butterflies. The forest falls within the tropical moist deciduous belt, dominated by sal and bamboo which form varying mixtures with each other and other usual associates like Saja, Dhawara, Arjun, Mahua, Achar, Amla, etc. Due to these vulnerable features this parks attracts a lot of the peoples every year. The calm and peaceful environment in the park provides all the sustainable climatic conditions in the park.

The major point of attraction in the Umariya district is the Bandhavgarh fort. Bandhavgarh is the name of tehsil in Umaria district. Formerly it was the capital of the Bandhavgarh Kingdom of the Magha dynasty, then the head quarters of the tehsil. The fort of Bandhavgarh is a place of considerable archaeological and historical importance. It is a natural adorned fort and stands on a hill, at an attitude of about 2430 mts above sea level. The Bamnia hill is also a part of the fort, because it is enclosed by a rampart. The fort is on the Rewa Umaria road, at a distance of about 41 kms from Umariya Town. The lush greenery around this fort makes this place glorious.  
 
3: Chandia Khas

The major attraction in this region is the Chandia khas. It is located on the Umaria Katni road, at a distance of about 21 kms from Umariya. The most important spot of Chandia Khas is a small temple, enshrining Goddess Kalika. Her mouth is wide open, but she out stretched tongue is broken. There is also an old temple of god Rama and his consort Janaki. It was the seat of Thakur of Chandia. A small fair meets at Suraswahi Chandia for 3 days in February March, on the occasion of Shivaratri. This place is visited by the lot of the peoples in every year due to its panoramic location.  
 
4: The Caves

The major heritage sites near the Umariya is the beautiful caves .There are 39 caves in the Bandhavgarh fort and in the surrounding hillocks up to a radius of about 5 km. The oldest cave is of 1st century. Several caves have inscriptions in Brahmi script. Some caves have embossed figure such as those of tiger, pig, elephant and horseman. Badi gufa, the largest cave, has broad entrance, nine small rooms and several pillars. It has been dated back to the 10th century. The cave appears to be primitive lacking the elaborate statues and carvings seen in the caves of Buddhist period. Its purpose remains mystery. This mysterious place in the region is place of great gathering of tourists. The panoramic view of these caves is really very beautiful.  
 
5: Pali
Pali
The most important religious place in the region is the famous goddess Birsingh Devi. Local peoples have a great faith on the goddess Birsingh. Birsinghpur Pali is situated on the Umaria Shahdol road, at a distance of about 36 kms. Pali is also a railway station, and there is a rest house for the tourists to stay. Near the railway station there is a temple, enshrining Birasinidevi by local belief she is Goddess Kali, represented here as skeleton Goddess, but with her mouth closed. Many remains of old Jain idols kept here in some Hindu temples. The annual fairs are held both in October and March, on the occasion of Navaratri, near the temple of Goddess. The locales peoples have great faith on the deity, which fulfil each and every wish of the peoples.  
 
6: Chechpur Waterfall

Apart from Bandhavgarh, Chechpur Waterfall is another attraction point for tourist which is 50 kms away from the jungle but in the jungle and is regularly visited by many tourists.
