About Giridih

Giridih is one of the famous mining towns of Jharkhand. Located at the centre of North Chota Nagpur Division, Giridih shares its border with Nawada district of Bihar in North, Deoghar and Jamtara districts in the East, Hazaribagh and Koderma in the West and Dhanbad and Bokaro in the South. It is old and beautiful hamlet located amidst the hills which has attracted tourists from the neighbouring states. In 1972, Giridih district was newly formed which was earlier a part of Hazaribagh district. Spreading over 4853.56 sq kms Giridih is a storehouse of ruby mica and coal field. The word “Giridih” means land of hills and hillocks which focuses the upland area of the region. Vast stretch of forests covers maximum part of the district. Sal tree is mostly found here apart from bamboo, Semal, Mahua and Palash. Giridih has a rich source of minerals Mica being one of them. Parasnath Hills or Sri Sammeta Shikharji is the most important tourist spot of Giridih. It is pilgrimage centre for Jain people. Barakar and Sakri are two important rivers flowing through the district. Usri Falls is another captivating tourist spot. Situated at a distance of 13 kms the river here is seen falling from 40 ft steep height.

Parasnath Hills are a range of hills located in Giridih district of Jharkhand. The highest peak is 1350 mts. It is one of the most important pilgrimage centres for Jains. They call it Sammet Sikhar. The hill is named after Parasnath, the 23rd Tirthankara. Twenty of the twenty four Jain Tirthankaras attained salvation on this hill. According to some, nine Tirthakaras attained salvation on this hill. For each of them there is a shrine on the hill. Some of the temples on the hill are believed to be more than 2000 years old. However, although the place is habited from ancient times, the temples may be of more recent origin. The Santhals call it Marang Buru, the hill of the deity. They celebrate a hunting festival on the full moon day in Baisakh.

By Air - Though there is no airport in Giridih, a landing airstrip fulfils some of the necessities. Boro aerodrome is located at the head quarter of Giridih. Nearest airport is Birsa Munda Airport in Ranchi at a distance of 208 kms from Giridh.

By Train - Single passenger train runs from Madhupur Junction to Giridih Station five times a day. They are distanced by 54 kms and are connected by single broad gauge railway line. Parasnath Station is another important station which is 48 kms away from Giridih.

By Road - Giridih is well connected by roadways as Grand Trunk Road passes through the district. Giridih is situated at the junction of NH 2 and NH 100. 

By Bus - Bus terminal being located in the centre of the city is easily accessible from any corner. Both private and Government buses are available. Regular bus service not only connects every corner of the district but also connects Dhanbad, Bokaro, Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Hazaribagh and Deoghar.

Local Transport - Local means of transportation include trekkers, autos, rickshaws, mini buses and private taxis.
