About Rajkot

Rajkot is a city of Gujarat state in India and administrative headquarters of the Rajkot District, located on the banks of the Aji River and Niari River. Rajkot is famous as the capital of the former state of Saurashtra. Rajkot, though no more a capital, has always had a glorious past and still is a favourite tourist spot due to the historic remains from the British era and also the hospitality of the Rajkot people. Rajkot was founded in 1620 AD by Thakore Sahib Vibhoji Ajoji Jadeja, a descendent of the Jamnagar Royal Family. Rajkot was named after the co-founder Raju Sandhi. Thakore Sahib was awarded territories for helping the Mughal Emperor to regain his footings in Gujarat. Along with that he also confronted the local Kathi tribes and the ruler of Junagadh to strengthen his state. The tourism in the city is picking up owing to the fact that there are a number of places here that are worth visiting. One reason for Rajkot’s fame can be attributed to India’s greatest freedom fighter, Mahatma Gandhi, who spent his early years here and also married his wife in this town. Pre-independence, Rajkot was under various rulers. After India’s independence, it was separated from Bombay and became a part of the newly-formed state of Gujarat on 1st May, 1960.
