Dedicated to the Sun God, this is the most revered festival in South India. Celebrated every year in January, this 4-day festival marks the onset of New Year. There is a festive spirit in every corner of the town as people decorate their houses, buy new clothes, and offer prasad and prayers to the deity. Each of these days holds a significance of its own. Pongal means, Boiling over. This Tamil harvest festival is celebrated with decorated cows, processions, and colorful Rangolis. Pongal is a sweet porridge made from newly harvested rice and eaten by all, even animals.
