City
The town under construction, known as Auroville, embodies the vision of tomorrow, generously backed by the Government of India and endorsed by UNESCO. Situated just beyond the Puducherry border in Tamil Nadu, this innovative venture in international communal living was inaugurated in 1968 at the request of the Mother of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. The inaugural event witnessed the participation of representatives from 124 nations and all states of India.
Currently in its early stages of development, Auroville showcases the Matrimandir, a central structure designed for silent contemplation, which is now operational, along with several other significant amenities like the Visitors Centre and Town Hall. The community comprises approximately 2000 residents hailing from over 40 different countries, living in more than 100 scattered settlements across the landscape, both within the city area and the surrounding Green Belt.
