Sunderban National Park is a place where sea meets the land, which is located at the southern tip of West Bengal. This park was proclaimed as the core area of Sunderbans Tiger Reserve in 1973. In 1977, this site was declared as a wildlife sanctuary. It was adorned as the World Heritage Site on the UNESCO in 1987. Two years later, in 1989, the entire Sunderbans region was declared as Biosphere Reserve. Sunderbans National Park, leading mangrove forest in the entire world, comprises majority of different mangrove types, which are identified in the world. In addition, there are several varieties of plant species, which accounts approximately to 64. These plant species have the capacity to withstand extreme climatic conditions along with salty shower, which are the resultants of tidal effects. Some of the popular found plants and trees available in this park include Goran, Genwa, Kankra, Sundari, Dhundal, Garjan and Passur. In addition, the Sunderbans National Park is also home to more than 400 tigers. World famous for man eating tendencies, the Royal Bengal Tigers inhabited in this park have developed a characteristic of swimming in the saline waters. Moreover, the park is also rich in flora and fauna. For bird lovers, some of the popular birds are also found in this region including Pale Billed Flower pecker, Black Capped Kingfisher, Asian Open Bill Stork and Common Woodshrike. The park houses several species of reptiles as well. Some of the endangered species that live protected within the Sunderbans include Batagur baska, Olive Ridley Turtle, Royal Bengal Tiger and King Crabs.
