Asar Mahal

About this place

Asar Mahal, built by Muhammed Adil Shah in late 1640s, used to serve as a Hall of Justice. It is also known as Mithari and Asar Mahal and stands with the support of four pillars. Moreover, hair from the beard of Prophet Muhammad was also used at this place. Owing to this, it is a place of worship for Muslim devotees. It has a hall, which consists of three tanks. One of the tanks is 15 ft deep, while the other two are comparatively smaller in size as well as in depth. Moreover, women are not allowed to enter the premises. The room on the upper storey that displays Persian architecture acts as the venue for the Urs festival every year. Citadel that corroborates the belief that Bijapur was an important city during pre Islam era is located behind the Asar Mahal. The Adil Shahi Dynasty, Aurangzeb, Nizams, the Peshwas and British all have some association with this place.
