About this place

The Kanaka Durga Temple is set atop the Indrakeeladri Hills. The River Krishna runs by it. The temple is dedicated to the Goddess Kanaka Durga, who is also the presiding deity of the city. The legends say that, in the Mahabharata, Arjuna got the powerful Pasupatha astra at this site after which he constructed this temple in the name of the Goddess. There is also a story which says that the temple was built in the 12th century by King Poosapati Madhava Varma, who built the modern Vijayawada Kingdom. The holy book Vedas say that the temple is self manifested or ‘Swayambhu’ hence it is very powerful. The major festivals celebrated in this temple are Saraswati Puja and Theppotsavam. The temple is very close to the railway station and the bus stop hence it is very accessible.
