Holy Name Cathedral

Chicago

About this place

The seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago Holy Name Cathedral is the centre of Catholic faith in the city and a wonderful example of Gothic revival architecture. The cathedral was built in 1874 in place of the Cathedral of Saint Mary and the Church of the Holy Name which were destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire. From the bronze front door depicting the Tree of Life to the detailed bas relief of Old Testament scenes on the altar the cathedral is adorned with numerous works of art. Emphasizing the importance music in its liturgical celebrations the cathedral features organs playing during the daily mass as well as other events.
