The four gateways or torans at Sanchi, a small village near Raisen, are covered with intricate carvings which portray scenes from the life of Buddha and a few Jataka tales. The Ashoka Pillar among the many pillars here is constructed in the Greco Buddhist style. It is from this construct that the National Emblem of India was adopted.
