Gondia district was carved out by division of Bhandara district. Gondia district is situated on north eastern side of Maharashtra State having state borders of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. In ancient time, this region was ruled over by Gond kings. The rich dense forest reflects in the culture of Gond people whose main business at that time was to collect lak from Palas tree and Gum from Babul tree, Gum is called as Gond in Hindi, hence the name. Gondia district is situated along the north eastern part of the state of Maharashtra. It was carved out of the Bhandara district. For administrative purposes the district is divided into two subdivisions namely Gondia and Deori, which are further divided into four taluks. Spread over an area of 5425 sq kms, the region of Gondia is mostly covered with forests. The district is underdeveloped where Paddy is main agriculture produce. There is no large scale industry in the entire district due to this district is economically backward. The city is popularly known as Rice city due to large number of rice mills. Gondia district is not known to be an idyllic tourist destination but still has some outstanding attractions to visit. It also houses some exotic mountain ranges and rural landscape unfettered by civilization. Some of the notable attractions are the 25000 year old natural caves, ancient temples that impart an antique look that has a site of archaeological importance. Darekasa Caves are located nearby the village Darekasa in the Chandsuraj hills. This village has served as the headquarters for Darekasa Zamindari. Some of the caves are naturally formed and some are artificially made and are known as Kachgad or iron fort.
