Bandipore town, otherwise known as the Port of Wular, is located on the eastern bank of the Wular Lake, one of the largest fresh water lakes in Asia. A park constructed on a pattern resembling that of the Nishat Bagh, one of the famous Mughal gardens of Jammu& Kashmir, attracts a large number of visitors. This town is known for its Forest Training and Research Institute. Apart from this, the town is home to the largest Islamic religious institution of the state, the Darul-Ullom-Rehamia. The town of Bandipore is popular for activities such as, trekking, fishing and mountaineering. Travellers interested in undertaking mountaineering must visit Mt. Harmukh located in the eastern region of the town. On route to Mt. Harmukh, tourists can set up camps at the Sheera Sir also known as ‘Lake of Spirits’. The Arin Nallah situated there is home to exotic fish species such as the grey trout, silver trout, and rainbow trout.
