Pattan, situated at an elevation of 1553 mts above sea level and a distance of 40 kms from Gulmarg, is located in the Baramulla district of Jammu & Kashmir. The place has been recognised as one of the historical capitals of the state. Established in 9th century by the renowned Hindu King, Shankarvarman, Pattan was named as Shankerpur, after his father King Awantiwarman. The town once was known to be the largest market place for fruits.
