About Bagalkot

Bagalkot is a town and headquarters in Bagalkot district of Karnataka. Lying on the bank of the river Ghataprabha, the District of Bagalkot is the second largest district in the State of Karnataka. The place is situated entirely on the North Karnataka Plateau, which is part of the larger Deccan Plateau. Located in north central Karnataka, Bagalkot is surrounded by Belgaum district to the west, Bijapur district and Gulbarga district to the north and north east, Raichur district to the east and Koppal district, Gadag district and Dharwad district to the southeast, south and southwest respectively. The place got its name as one of the kings of Bijapur had gifted the town to his daughter as bangle or ornament money. Accordingly the place acquired the name of Bagdikot, which was further corrupted to Bagilakote or Bagalkot. Bagalkot was earlier a part of Bijapur district, which was later craved out as a separate district in 1997. This area is home to some of the finest examples of temple architecture in the world. Bagalkot District with its fertile verdant terrains drained by perennial rivers facilitates extensive cultivation has transformed into a major tourist attraction. Being a sightseer's paradise with its panoramic beauty, today the city of Bagalkot is divided into two parts the new Bagalkot or Navangar and the old Bagalkot town. The construction of new town became necessary following submergence of parts of old town due to construction of Almatti dam. Navangar is a planned town with grid pattern lay out with wide roads, parks and other amenities.

This shrine, initially known as the Surya Temple, belongs to 9th century AD and consists of a hall, porch and a cell temple, along with a rekhanagara tower. Four central pillars, twelve pilasters and mukhamandapa used to support a hall that was present here earlier. The garbagriha of the temple was located in the central and back bays of this hall. Badigera Gudi underwent many changes between 11th and 12th centuries, such as the erection of a pidha type shikhara and establishment of smaller shrines that stood in south west corner on the axis of the original temple.
