About Dehradun

Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand, is nestled in the mountain ranges of the Himalayas. It is one of the most beautiful resorts in the sub-mountain tracks of India, known for its scenic surroundings. The name Dehradun is a collection of two words dera meaning camp & dun meaning valley. It's believed that Lord Rama and his brother did penance here for killing Ravana, the demon king.

1: Tapkeshawar Temple

One of the busiest pilgrim sites in Dehradun, Tapkeshwar temple is a cave temple with Lord Shiva as its presiding deity. The temple also hosts the annual Tapkeshwar Mela. The main feature of this temple is the water dropping from the ceiling over the Shivling. The temple is also known as Tapekshwar Mahadev Temple and is one of the most famous temples of Dehradun dedicated to Lord Shiva. Its location between two hills makes the temple a wonderful attraction, with pilgrims visiting it all year round.

2: Sahastradhara

Sahastradhara means Thousand fold spring and is a beautiful waterfall located 11 kilometers from Dehradun. Sahastradhara is famous for its sulfur water springs which contain medicinal properties and can cure skin ailments. Flanked by the Baldi River and caves on each side, Sahastradhara is renowned for its natural beauty and is a popular picnic spot. 4: Malsi Deer Park

5: Chandrabani Temple

It's believed that the daughter of heaven Ganga had manifested herself on this spot which is now popularly known as the Gautam Kund. 7: Tibetan Buddhist Temple

The temple was constructed in 1965 by the Tibetan community in India as an imitation of a Tibetan Monastery. 8: Robber’s Cave

Robber's cave is a river running through a cave-like natural formation. Located 8 kilometers from Dehradun, it is 600 meters long and divided into two parts. The center of the cave has a fort-like structure, now broken, and a ten meters high fall. Robber’s cave is famous for a strange natural occurrence a stream of water, only visible up to a few yards away. A beautiful and calm spot, ideal for a picnic, Robbers Cave is a popular tourist attraction maintained by the Uttarakhand Tourism Department.

9: Lacchiwalla

Lacchiwalla is a popular picnic spot situated a short distance away from Dehradun. Located on the Haridwar-Rishikesh Road, Lacchiwalla is 22 kilometers away from Dehradun and very popular among tourists. 10: Santala Devi Temple

About 15 km from Dehradun to reach the famous temple of Santaula Devi, one can utilize the bus facilities till Jaitunwala, then a 2 km drive to Punjabiwala by a jeep or any light vehicle, and further a 2 km trek to the temple. The temple is a symbol of faith and has cultural and religious significance.

11: Tapovan

Situated at the bank of the river Ganga, it is one of the holiest places for Hindus. According to Hindu mythology, it is the place where Guru Dronacharya has undergone penance. Located 5 km from the City Bus Stand on the Dehradun-Rajpur road, this place is in beautiful surroundings.

12: Asan Barrage Water Sports

A water sports resort was developed at the Asan Barrage by Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam in 1994. Asan Barrage is popularly known as Dhalipur Lake. Situated 43 km from Dehradun on the Chandigarh-Shimla highway, the resort offers several facilities like water skiing, boating, rowing, kayaking, canoeing & others.

16: Tiger Falls

Tiger fall is the main attraction in Chakrata, 20 km from Chakrata. This mesmerizing waterfall is accessible by a 5 km trek with rhododendron and oak trees everywhere. The scattered drops of this majestic waterfall are collected in a small pond making it a gorgeous location for taking a bath.

17: Lakhamandal

Past Kempty falls, 75 km on the Mussoorie-Yamnotri road, lies Lakhamandal, having historical & mythological significance. It figures prominently in the annals of Mahabharata. Legend has it that the Kauravas made a shelter house and conspired to burn the Pandavas alive here. Lakhmandal is on the bank of Yamuna at a distance of 35 km from Chakrata and 128 km from Dehradun. To the antiquarian, it provides considerable material of interest.

18: Moigad Fall

Located 69 km from Dehradun on Delhi-Yamunotri road via Dehradun-Vikasnagar, is the serene Moigad Fall. On the way to Yamunotri, one can bathe at the foot of the fall, which is a refreshing experience.

At a distance of 26 km near Chakrata and 105 km from Dehradun on the Chakrata-Tyuni motorable road, surrounded by high peaks and dense rain forests, this place is ideal for tourists. 20: Devban

Situated 16kms from Chakrata, Deoban is located in the hilly terrains of Chakrata at an elevation from 2,200mts to 3,025mts above sea level. Devban is the perfect spot in Chakrata that offers captivating and eye-feasting views of the Himalayan range. Devban covers an area with a lush green meadow on top of the hilly regions and dense dark deodar green forests. Devban is rich in varied flora & fauna & is also an ideal place for bird watching.

21: Hanol Village

God Shiva is worshipped as Lord Mahasu in the village of Hanol, lying on the eastern bank of the Tons. The majestic temple of the deity constructed in the Huna architectural style at 1429 meters above sea level is 186 km from Dehradun.

22: Timpli Pass

Timpli Pass is a historical place where the British Army men marched to support Major General Ochterlony in his war against Gurkha General Amar Singh Thapa’s men. Timli pass is one of the gorgeous landscapes in Kalsi. It rests assured that the picnicker would not be dissatisfied while at Timli Pass since the natural vistas there are simply spectacular. The entire tourists opt to drive through this grassy land while their return journey from Kalsi to Asan Barrage. This land is so serene and verdant that one would love the scenic ambiance.

23: Vikasnagar

Vikasnagar is a city in the Dehradun district, 32 km west of the district headquarters in Dehradun. This place is on the border of the Dehradun district and Sirmaur district. Dehradun railway station is the only railway station 33 km near Vikasnagar. Vikasnagar is famous for shopping foreign goods as well as traditional salwar kameez and the finest of brass and copper-made materials at a much reasonable rate throughout India.

24: Asan Barrage

The Asan Barrage is a wetland created by harnessing the water of rivers Yamuna and Asan on the western side of the Doon valley. The Asan Barrage attracts many residents and migratory birds each year. During the winter season, the bird population is at its highest. It is heaven for bird watchers & naturalists who can happily look forward to sightings of the great crested grebe, the red-crested poacher, and even the tufted duck. During the winters, the Himalayan birds can be spotted easily, like redshank, shoveled, mallard, greylag geese, and widgeon.

25: Kalsi

Kalsi is a beautiful tourist destination perched at an altitude of 780 m above sea level in the Dehradun District of Uttarakhand. This place serves as the gateway to the Jaunsar-Bawar tribal region and is at the meeting point of the rivers Yamuna and Tons. This place is famous for various ancient monuments, adventure sports, and picnic sites. Cool winters and mild summers prevail in Kalsi, making the destination an ideal retreat around the year. The Balani Devi temple is 1700 meters above sea level and 155 km from Dehradun on a motorable road and slightly away from the main road. The construction is unique from the view of religious architecture in Jaunsar. Balani Devi is the sister of the four main deities Vashika, Mahasu, Pawasi, and Chalda of Jaunsar Bhawar.

By Air: - Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest Airport to Dehradun city of Uttarakhand state. It is situated 25 kms from Dehradun city with motor able roads. Taxis are easily available from Jolly Grant Airport to Dehradun. Jolly Grant Airport is well connected to Delhi with daily flights.

By Railway: - Dehradun is well connected with railways and you can reach up to Dehradun by train from major cities of India. There are two trains that run daily between Delhi to Dehradun and vice-versa. Shatabdi Express and Mussoorie Express are the two major trains connecting Dehradun with major cities of India like Amritsar, Howrah, Bombay, Delhi, Lucknow, Varanasi etc.

By Road: - Dehradun is well connected with all major road transportation facilities. Luxury and normal Buses to Dehradun are easily available from ISBT Kashmiri Gate, Delhi.
