About Dehradun

Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand, is nestled in the mountain ranges of the Himalayas. It is one of the most beautiful resorts in the sub-mountain tracks of India, known for its scenic surroundings. The name Dehradun is a collection of two words dera meaning camp & dun meaning valley. It's believed that Lord Rama and his brother did penance here for killing Ravana, the demon king. 

Under the British, Dehradun became an elite town with many fine institutions like Forest Research Institute, Doon School, Welham Schools for girls and boys, & many more, like the ONGC and Wadia Institute of Himalayan Studies, were added in time. Dehradun has now become an important tourist destination. At its southern tip is touching the boundary of district Haridwar, another tourist hotspot.

1: Tapkeshawar Temple
Tapkeshawar Temple
One of the busiest pilgrim sites in Dehradun, Tapkeshwar temple is a cave temple with Lord Shiva as its presiding deity. The temple also hosts the annual Tapkeshwar Mela. The main feature of this temple is the water dropping from the ceiling over the Shivling. The temple is also known as Tapekshwar Mahadev Temple and is one of the most famous temples of Dehradun dedicated to Lord Shiva. Sahastradhara means Thousand fold spring and is a beautiful waterfall located 11 kilometers from Dehradun. The temple was constructed in 1965 by the Tibetan community in India as an imitation of a Tibetan Monastery. Legend has it that the Kauravas made a shelter house and conspired to burn the Pandavas alive here. Lakhmandal is on the bank of Yamuna at a distance of 35 km from Chakrata and 128 km from Dehradun. To the antiquarian, it provides considerable material of interest.

By Air: - Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest Airport to Dehradun city of Uttarakhand state. It is situated 25 kms from Dehradun city with motor able roads. Taxis are easily available from Jolly Grant Airport to Dehradun. Jolly Grant Airport is well connected to Delhi with daily flights. 

 

By Railway: - Dehradun is well connected with railways and you can reach up to Dehradun by train from major cities of India. There are two trains that run daily between Delhi to Dehradun and vice-versa. Shatabdi Express and Mussoorie Express are the two major trains connecting Dehradun with major cities of India like Amritsar, Howrah, Bombay, Delhi, Lucknow, Varanasi etc.

 

By Road: - Dehradun is well connected with all major road transportation facilities. Luxury and normal Buses to Dehradun are easily available from ISBT Kashmiri Gate, Delhi.
